12:10 Haydock – Might I
Might I was an impressive debut bumper winner last December at Warwick and was too keen in a listed bumper at Newbury. He ran well on his hurdles debut at Newton Abbot when easily beating Thunder Rock, who won at Wetherby last week. That was heavy ground and it’s different ground here but he should hopefully get a decent pace to aim at and he could be very good.

13:15 Haydock – Tommy’s Oscar
Tommy’s Oscar was progressive last season, winning four times, including easily accounting for the reopposing Christopher Wood at Kelso off a mark of 132. He was third in the Scottish Champion Hurdle off 138 and has been second and third on his first two starts this season. The third last time is strong form, the second Teescomponents Lad won at Market Rasen on Thursday and Bass Rock has a great chance in the big handicap later on the card. Tommy’s Oscar was outstayed as it was his first attempt at 2m4f under rules and Carlisle with soft ground and a stiff finish might have suited the stronger stayers. A return to better ground and a less demanding test of stamina that Haydock presents will suit this strong travelling type and he can rate higher than 138.
13:50 Haydock – Bravemansgame
I’m not sure Itchy Feet would love the sharp track here over this trip. Pay The Piper ran a cracker in the Colin Parker but he needs to improve again. As for Alnadam, he would probably want testing ground at this trip. Bravemansgame was impressive on his chase debut where he easily accounted for Fusil Raffles, albeit getting 12lbs. He jumped well and looks like he will develop into one of the best British novice chasers this season. Paul Nicholls has won this seven times in the last 10 years and has won it with the likes of Politilogue and Clan Des Obeaux. He’s not an attractive price but it’s difficult to see him getting beaten at the same time.
14:05 Ascot – Lostintranslation
Lostintranslation was deeply disappointing last season but the Tizzard’s just had a really poor season. They are 8-35 (23 per cent) for the last two weeks but they only had 32 winners from October to April last season. He was third in the 2020 Gold Cup when he didn’t probably stay as strongly as Al Boum Photo and Santini. He has won fresh previously and the good ground will play to his strengths while it wouldn’t be ideal for many of the others. It’s also worth noting that he has had a wind op.
14:25 Haydock – Bass Rock (Each Way)
Bass Rock is a five-year-old with only seven career starts. He didn’t win until going into handicaps but has fairly bolted up in both starts in handicaps. He impressed at Kelso on good ground over 2m5.5f off a mark of 115. He was weak in the market on reappearance at Carlisle suggesting the run may have been needed a touch but he hacked up again on soft ground over 2m4f off a mark of 123. Second Teescomponents Lad won at Market Rasen on Thursday to frank that form. There’s a small concern that he has had two wind ops in the space of six months, however, he is well capable of defying a mark of 130 and I don’t really have stamina concerns for him either.
14:40 Ascot – Buzz
Goshen wants easier ground and has a 6lb penalty, as does Song For Someone. Guard Your Dreams was impressive at Cheltenham last time but that was a handicap off 140, so he would need to improve. Molly Ollys Wishes was an improver last season and was very impressive at Wetherby on her reappearance but she was found out against the geldings in the National Spirit Hurdle at Fontwell last season. Buzz bolted up in a handicap hurdle here last November off a mark of 137 and nearly followed up off 148 when second to Not So Sleepy in the Betfair Exchange Trophy. He was also second in the Aintree Hurdle. He won the Cesarewitch last time off 96 and he’s still only seven years old and should prove very tough to beat.
15:00 Haydock – Next Destination (Each Way)
A Plus Tard has tended to be vulnerable on his seasonal reappearance and some of Henry de Bromhead’s best horses have looked like they have needed their first start of the season. Bristol De Mai obviously is a legend around Haydock and to me is the one to beat but I’m taking a chance on Next Destination with first time pieces applied. He’s 4-5 as a novice hurdler, including winning a Grade 1 over 3m at Punchestown, with his only defeat coming in the Ballymore when staying on third to Samcro and Black Op. He had two and a half years off the track and switched to Paul Nicholls. He won his first two starts over fences last season, including a Grade 2 at Newbury on good ground. He was second in the National Hunt Chase to Galvin but think the fact that the race developed into a bit of a spring played to Galvin’s strengths. Galvin has franked that form when pushing Frodon all the way in the Champion Chase at Down Royal this season.
15:35 Haydock – Strictlyadancer
Strictlyadancer won twice at Cheltenham this season off 110 and 115. Value for more than the winning distance off 2.25l last time where he tanked into the lead three out and idled a little up the hill. If something could have taken him to between two out he would have won by a wide margin and I don’t think the 7lb rise will stop him. The only worry is that it was only a week ago.
