Hexham brings out the best in SHERIFF GARRETT and he’s the selection ahead of last year’s winner Hart Of Steel, whose winning form at Carlisle last month has been franked by the runner-up. The ex-French Force De Frap and the lightly raced Honda Fifty are other interesting contenders, while Frightened Rabbit can run his usual solid race.
After making excellent progress over hurdles in the second half of last season, culminating with a very creditable second in a hot Aintree handicap in April, J’AI FROID looks the one to beat on his chasing debut. Emitom was a very classy staying hurdler a couple of seasons ago and he showed some aptitude for chasing last autumn but his current ability is tricky to gauge and a bigger threat to the selection may come from Doyen Breed, who probably posted a new career-best performance when second over hurdles recently.
The standard set by those who have raced under rules isn’t particularly strong and this could go to CAPTAIN QUINT, who was bought for £110,000 after finishing second on his debut in an Irish maiden point last November. Jack Of All Shapes has improved with each of his three bumper runs and is second choice on this first hurdles start. Maid Of Houxty was a promising third on her hurdle debut at Newcastle last time out in February, while the Donald McCain-trained rules newcomer Tim Pat is another interesting contender.
For Jim has already enjoyed a very productive season but he required a very determined ride to prevail by a narrow margin here last month and is another 5lb higher now. Preference is for REAL ARMANI who looked as good as ever last month and ran very well in defeat behind For Jim here last time, despite making a significant jumping error at the third-last fence. Lucinda Russell’s two runners, Buddha Scheme and Prince Dundee can also feature.
In what looks an open race it might be worth chancing BEAT BOX, who ended last season in very poor form but ran well over C&D last autumn, after a break, and is now very well handicapped. Donladd is feared most, ahead of fellow chasing debutants Without Conviction and Very Patient.
Last-time-out scorers Heart Of Kernow and Red Ochre are respected in that order of preference, but the less exposed EARLY MORNING DEW is taken to build on his Uttoxeter efforts and get off the mark.
Last year’s runner-up GOLAN CLOUD (nap) won over C&D in March and holds strong claims in this weak race if anywhere close to his best. There can be optimism in that regard given that he was also making his reappearance 12 months ago. Wheelbahri has been showing promise over fences and may be the main danger, ahead of handicap newcomer Shoeshine Boy.
