The five-runner Wincanton bumper won by LE CHIFFRE D’OR in April wasn’t a strong race, but he got the job done pretty comfortably and is the one to beat on today’s hurdling debut. Arbennig made a very underwhelming hurdle debut last month, but was placed in a course bumper last season.
This could be run at a strong pace. LEGEND OF ZORRO finished just behind Wavecrest when fifth at Wincanton last month, but he was quite badly hampered just as he was trying to challenge in the home straight and can turn the tables here if the first-time blinkers have the desired effect. Second choice is Marble Moon, who is also on a workable mark.
Lightly raced six-year-old Steinkraus looked suited by the step up to 2m 3f when scoring at Ayr two weeks ago and can probably improve again over today’s even longer trip. However, an interesting alternative is NICKELSONTHEDIME, who looks well handicapped on last autumn’s novice form and might have needed last month’s reappearance outing. Hidden Depths, a course and distance winner last month is respected, while Wrong Way Harry and Cry Wolf also come here in good form.
Lost In Montmartre seemed to enjoy herself when dominating a small-field course and distance event from the front last month and she will have obvious claims if a similar tactical scenario develops here. But, preference is for NEVILLE’S CROSS – who made a shaky start to his chasing career, but has won two of his last three races and might still be improving.
Paul Nicholls’ runner Switch Hitter was a promising hurdler last season and looks interesting over this new trip on his chasing debut. However, it’s hard to be swayed from NO ANXIETY, who won easily over course and distance last month. Outonpatrol perhaps has less potential than the other two, but he’s in good form and ought to give his running.
Evan Williams’ PETERBOROUGH (NAP) has some fairly useful chasing form and showed enough at Plumpton last month to suggest he can exploit his lower hurdle mark soon. He drops down from 0-130 grade here and gets the nod. Not many of the others make appeal but the two mares, Yauthym and Miss M have both become well handicapped. Meanwhile, Dream Machine also has possibilities.
