Dan Skelton’s newcomer Nurse Susan has a good jumping pedigree and could be anything but preference is for the proven ability of HIDOR DE BERSY, who made a winning bumper debut in March. Snowy Clouds and The Big Jetaway are two recruits from the pointing scene that are worth a check in the betting.
Olly Murphy’s two runners, I K Brunel and Notre Pari, begin their new campaigns on workable marks (albeit both are 1lb out of the handicap today) and it will be interesting to see which of those is stronger in the betting but the one in this field with star potential is MIDNIGHT RIVER, who was a highly promising novice hurdler last season and now makes his chasing debut.
This might go to BLUE HAWAII, who is now 5lb below the handicap mark she was allotted after her Catterick novice win in March and can hopefully build upon last month’s quite encouraging reappearance run. Volkovka is second choice but Gine Sacre looks interesting on her British debut, while Marta Des Mottes is sure to appreciate today’s drop in class.
Donald McCain’s MINELLA DRAMA quickly developed into a useful novice hurdler last season and the evidence from his recent success at Uttoxeter suggests he’s even better over fences. He won that race quite comfortably and, given his tendency to jump right, this switch to a clockwise circuit is the obvious move. Furthermore, he has the best chance on the adjusted figures. Gumball has been prone to the odd jumping error over fences and is not one to rely upon heavily but he looked in excellent form when winning on the Flat for his new stable last month.

This could prove to be competitive despite a relatively small field. Captain Biggles should again be capable of going close and could prove the main threat to FATHER JOHN, who is just preferred after staging a revival to win last time. Malpas is another potential danger.
Several of these have a point to prove for one reason or another, FRENCHY DU LARGE being the glaring exception. Indeed, he improved when signing off last season on a winning note in a Ludlow handicap hurdle and it’s highly likely that this 6-y-o will be seen in an even better light now switched to fences. First Account is second choice ahead of If Not For Dylan.
NICEANDEASY‘s well-being has to be taken on trust following a lengthy lay-off, but it’s a risk worth taking given that he resumes on an attractive mark and represents an in-form yard. Stolen Money has few miles on the clock and is feared most ahead of Headscarf Lil, who scored here last time and looks the pick of the Nicky Richards-trained duo. Stylish Moment also enters calculations.
