GINTO can continue the excellent run of Gordon Elliott by winning the opening 2m 4f maiden hurdle at Navan on Sunday. The Walk In The Park gelding was an expensive purchase after winning his point-to-point and despite getting turned over at Fairyhouse on his rules debut, he was impressive when winning here in February. That experience is more than good enough to see him beat off these rivals, which includes stable-mates Gift Of Kings and Happy Victory in a race Elliot won with Andy Dufresne in 2019.
Despite been declared a non-runner twice in July and August due to unsuitable ground, MY MATE MOZZIE won easily on good ground at Punchestown last month. Gavin Cromwell’s five-year-old saw off useful flat performer Barbados by an impressive eight-lengths and can continue his progression in this graded novice hurdle. San Salvador was unlucky not to score again when falling late at Tipperary, while Chemical Energy could prove the biggest danger despite dropping in trip.
The Lismullen Hurdle sees the seasonal return of both FLOORING PORTER and Sire Du Berlais who had several battles last season at the highest level. Gavin Cromwell’s six-year-old should appreciate the Navan ground conditions better than his old foe, while this left-handed track and race tactics will suit as Danny Mullins is likely to go forward alongside Grand Roi. Elsewhere, Darasso has race fitness on his side but plenty to find on official ratings, so FLOORING PORTER gets the nap vote on return.
If luck has gone his way earlier on the card, hopefully Gavin Cromwell can strike again with BRIDES HILL in this 2m handicap hurdle under Luke Dempsey. The daughter of Dylan Thomas has been very progressive with victories at Tramore (in a maiden hurdle) and more recently in handicap company at Tipperary last month. The manner of that victory suggests an 11Ib rise in the ratings to 119 might not stop her scoring again, with Easca Peasca and Influential Lady looking her biggest dangers.
BROKEN ICE has been paying his way nicely as a dual flat and jumps performer and is another selection for me from the Gavin Cromwell stable this Sunday. His staying on victory at Bellewstown in August suggests he’ll appreciate this extra distance with a 5lb rise in the ratings looking manageable in a competitive event. He’s fit enough to run well after recent spins at Listowel and here at Navan on the flat, while Gaspard Due Seuil looks his biggest danger having a first run in a handicap for Henry De Bromhead.
The Fortria Chase is a match between the Gigginstown pair of NOTEBOOK and Samrco who both return for the season having lost a bit of spark in recent times. Henry De Bromhead’s eight-year-old has shown his ability to run well fresh having won on return at Naas last season, before solid efforts behind Chacan Pour Soi at Leopardstown. The use of blinkers, a drop to 2-miles and the return of Jack Kennedy in the saddle might bring some spark to Samcro, but Notebook looks more reliable and gets the verdict.
Some nice horses have won this Beginners Chase in the past and hopefully this year’s renewal will produce a nice novice chaser for the season ahead. BALLYADAM should kick off his season by securing victory despite a blip when falling at the first on return at Punchestown last month. The Cheveley Park runner was a good novice hurdler last season, winning the Royal Bond before running creditable races behind Appreciate It at Leopardstown and Cheltenham. Wide Receiver makes his debut over fences but was miles behind Ballyadam back in February with Buddy Rich looking the each-way value having finished second on all four starts so far over fences.
An interesting closing bumper with any rain a benefit to the chances of Gringo D’aubrelle who reverts to a bumper having finished second over hurdles for Gordon Elliott at Galway last month. King Kali and Kool Kal return having finished second and fourth in a Limerick bumper last month, while COLONEL BELLEW, L’yser and Mount Brown are intriguing newcomers. Joseph O’Brien’s national hunt horses are running very well, and this flat bred gelding should represent some value on debut with any market support a positive in an open looking finale.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?
12:40 – My Mate Mozzie
Despite been declared a non-runner twice in July and August due to unsuitable ground, MY MATE MOZZIE won easily on good ground at Punchestown last month. Gavin Cromwell’s five-year-old saw off useful flat performer Barbados by an impressive eight-lengths and can continue his progression in this graded novice hurdle. San Salvador was unlucky not to score again when falling late at Tipperary, while Chemical Energy could prove the biggest danger despite dropping in trip.
13:10 – Flooring Porter (NAP)
The Lismullen Hurdle sees the seasonal return of both FLOORING PORTER and Sire Du Berlais who had several battles last season at the highest level. Gavin Cromwell’s six-year-old should appreciate the Navan ground conditions better than his old foe, while this left-handed track and race tactics will suit as Danny Mullins is likely to go forward alongside Grand Roi. Elsewhere, Darasso has race fitness on his side but plenty to find on official ratings, so FLOORING PORTER gets the nap vote on return.
