Maybe I’m a bit biased with an Irish raider but I fancy TWILIGHT JET to run a big race at Del Mar. He was a ready winner of the Cornwallis Stakes at Newmarket when last seen this side of the pond over 5f and has trialled very well this week over in California. That run may make him the fastest two-year-old in Europe and crucially he’s drawn in stall 1. He should go very well for trainer Michael O’Callaghan and regular rider Leigh Roche.
Blink and you’ll miss this for the 5f speedsters. A few of these have clashed before in Europe, namely last year’s winner Glass Slippers and A Case of You, where the Irish raider was five lengths in front of Glass Slippers in the Prix de l’Abbaye last month on heavy ground at Longchamp. Wesley Ward’s Golden Pal will fly from the gates, but GLASS SLIPPERS has the ideal draw in box one to track him into the straight from stall three. She hasn’t won this year but looks a bit of value to put it up to the favourite.
If we’re still awake on Saturday night, we have a cracking race in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf that Irish raider Tarnawa won last year for Curragh trainer Dermot Weld. It looks a strong European challenge with Aidan O’Brien well represented as is Charlie Appleby with Yabir while Roger Varian saddles Teona. However, I’m siding with an American-trained runner in DOMESTIC SPENDING for trainer Chad Brown. I ‘ve been very impressed with his runs to date and while he should have won last time, he looks good value in stall three to take on Tarnawa who hasn’t been well served by the draw in 13.
