The big man has researched the cards at Wetherby, Ascot and Down Royal so you don't have to.

Wetherby 13.20 – Corran Cross (each way)

I’ve landed on Corran Cross for Richard Bandey as the ground looks like it’ll be good. It’s a wide-open race but Corran Cross’ best runs are over this trip. Some of the other horses want softer ground which could be the difference. It’s not a major fancy so I’m going each way.

Ascot 13.35 – Sizable Sam

I was initially fully focused on Nassalam but I’ve turned my attention to Sizable Sam for Jeremy Scott, who has a superb strike rate at Ascot. Sizable Sam needs to improve slightly but the fact that Jeremy has sent him here has to mean something. He’s a nice price too.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

Wetherby 13.55 – Her Indoors

I fancy Her Indoors, largely based on the ground. She was very impressive on good ground at Cheltenham in April so hopefully we’ll get more of the same here.

Ascot 14.10 – Soaring Glory

I’m all over Soaring Glory. He was impressive when winning the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury in February. He didn’t quite cut it in the Supreme at Cheltenham but he’s still worth backing. Interestingly, he has won on every occasion after a break.

Wetherby 14.30 – Run For Oscar

Paisley Park is obviously not as good as he was a while ago and he’s certainly beatable. I’ve looked elsewhere and landed on Run For Oscar for Charles Byrnes. Most of the horses in this one are eight, nine or 10 years old, however, Run For Oscar is only six years old. He has a couple of Handicap wins and is stepping up in trip and hopefully it’ll bring about improvement. Charles maybe wants to test Run For Oscar against Paisley Park and that will help develop their plan for the season.

Ascot 14.45 – Sully DOc

Editeur Du Gite and Sully DOc faced off at Ascot last year, with Sully DOc coming out on top. I see Editeur Du Gite leading all the way but he might get caught out on the run for home. Sully DOc will do me.

Down Royal 14.50 – Minella Indo

You look for reasons not to back Minella Indo but there aren’t many. The Cheltenham Gold Cup was very impressive and he’s very much the one to beat. There are also a lot of sub-plots with the jockeys. It’s the least surprising thing ever that Jack Kennedy’s not allowed to ride Minella Indo. It’s like Ruby Walsh saying to Willie Mullins he’s going to ride for another trainer at Cheltenham because of one horse.

Gordon Elliott’s stable is so strong, of course Jack Kennedy is going to be there. It was clearly Gigginstown as well making the decision and they’re definitely not going to let their jockeys go up. The fact it was assumed Jack Kennedy would get off and ride suggests to me that Delta Work wouldn’t be one he was thinking would have a great chance.

If Delta Work was second favourite it certainly wouldn’t have been a given that Jack Kennedy could ride the Gold Cup winner. It’s great news for Rachael Blackmore because I know the owners of Minella Indo would be loyal. It’s great news for her because she chose to ride A Plus Tard over Minella Indo and that lost her the Gold Cup-winning ride. For all of those reasons, Minella Indo will do me!

Wetherby 15.05 – Shan Blue

The two P’s next to Cyrname is enough to put you off – I still wouldn’t be surprised if he won though – so I’m going with Shan Blue for Dan and Harry Skelton. The ground could be ideal which is always a bonus.

Ascot 15.20 – Vinndication

Vinndication was always considered very good and he loves Ascot. I’m going to ignore the weight and look at the course form.

Wetherby 15.40 – Mackenberg

I quite fancy Mackenberg for Donald McCain. The yard is absolutely flying at the moment and they’re hovering at about a 33 per cent win rate. Mackenberg has won three times after a break and he hasn’t ran since April. Hopefully history repeats itself.
