13:38 Martha Brae (NAP)

She was out of form over fences when last seen in the spring but Dan Skelton’s new recruit MARTHA BRAE (nap) reverts to hurdling on a very attractive mark and gets the nod. Doyen Queen has something to prove on soft or heavy ground but her seasonal debut was promising and her pedigree makes her an interesting candidate for today’s step up in trip. My Lady Grey is next on the list.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

14:13 Steady Away

Oscars Moonshine started off in handicaps with three wins in this month last year and is not yet fully exposed but he hasn’t raced since and encounters slower ground today. Perhaps the answer might be STEADY AWAY, who ran okay on his recent seasonal debut and has dropped to a workable mark. Handicap debutant Nickelsonthedime is a contender if judged on last autumn’s form.

14:48 Halo Des Obeaux

A novice hurdle with plenty of depth. The most obvious answer is HALO DES OBEAUX, who ran to a useful level when winning over hurdles in France and comes here after a very encouraging stable debut two weeks ago. However, Irish point winner Hidden Heroics was set to make his rules debut in a recent Grade 2 novice before a late withdrawal, so he needs to be taken very seriously if strong in the betting. Harry Fry’s two runners Might I and Millbank Flyer have shown a significant level of ability, as has bumper winner Thunder Rock.

15:23 Arian

Last year’s winner ARIAN is handicapped to put up a bold defence if she’s rediscovered her confidence, which looked shot to pieces in her two starts after taking a horrid fall at Cheltenham last December. Orrisdale ran well in all his completions over fences last season and returns from a break with his yard in good form. Kauto The King is next on the shortlist.

15:58 Vocal Duke

Ten Past Midnight’s near-miss and VOCAL DUKE’s win in successive divisions of a Uttoxeter handicap 18 days ago rate personal best hurdling efforts, and preference is for Toby Lawes’s representative on testing ground here, based largely on his effort having been recorded on the softer surface of the two. The still-improving Independence and the 4lb well-in Alramz round off the shortlist.

16:30 Kingsmill Gin

There could be more to come from First Assembly and Isla Di Milano when the emphasis is more on stamina, while Leave My Alone’s latest new mark still looks within reach. However, KINGSMILL GIN could improve on the step back up from 2m5f and become the latest member of her family of slow-maturing homebreds to oblige for Jackie Du Plessis.

17:05 Great Ocean

Hard Frost was placed over C&D in April and might well be capable of better but the suggestion is GREAT OCEAN, who joined Philip Hobbs after winning an Irish point in good style in the spring. Several of the newcomers represent stables that do well in bumpers and all of Barest Of Margins, Festive Glory, Rex Of Temple and Dellaway make appeal on paper. The market should help to sort that group into a pecking order.
