None of these can be ruled out with confidence but the solid option is the penalised NEW REALITY who was arguably fortunate to make a winning hurdling debut at Perth but can build on that and go close again. Second choice is Royal Regard who showed promise over hurdles in France for Tom George, with We Still Believe, who made a perfectly satisfactory hurdling debut two weeks ago, also considered.
Only three runners but this is a fascinating novice chase. The ex-French 4yo Hardy Du Seuil meets two useful rivals on his British debut, but he receives 9lb and could be dangerous if allowed an easy lead. Third Time Lucki ran a cracker when sixth in the County Hurdle in March and may prove the best of these in the longer term, but the likeable PAY THE PIPER gets the vote, with the benefit of recent match practice and his wealth of experience in points.
The pick of those with recent hurdling form is probably Glencassley, and Charlie Longsdon’s unexposed sort should be in the shake-up, but he may struggle to concede weight to Cardano and SIRUH DU LAC. The former is a most interesting recruit from the Flat and has more than enough ability to win races over hurdles in due course, but preference is for the smart chaser Siruh Du Lac, who has a significant class edge over most.

Yccs Portocervo has the benefit of a recent run, but he took a hike in the weights after a productive summer and may be vulnerable now. Top of the list is WHOSHOTTHESHERIFF, who still looks on a workable mark and should find conditions in his favour. He’s just preferred to Gaelik Coast, a reappearance winner last season and open to further improvement. Road Warrior is up in grade but still warrants respect in his bid for a four-timer.
Fourth in the last two runnings of this contest, Teescomponents Lad should be thereabouts once more after a fine second at Perth under Tom Midgley but FLIGHT DECK has fewer miles on the clock and still looks unexposed over 3m+. He looks the likeliest winner. Completing the shortlist are Bootlegger and Innisfree Lad.
The 2019 winner Ballyvic Boru (second choice) is again of interest under Brian Hughes, while Ruinous is unexposed and a solid contender if ready to do himself full justice after a layoff, but PRINCE ESCALUS has proven fitness on his side and can build on the promise of his chasing debut and add to his two successes over hurdles last season.
The top three in the weights are all progressive types but preference is for the more exposed CONSTANCIO (nap) who has his optimum conditions here and can benefit from Peter Kavanagh’s 10lb claim. Takeit Easy is second choice ahead of Tommy’s Oscar.
