Starsky is respected on his chasing debut having made a promising start for Dan Skelton but clear preference is for THEGALLANTWAY (nap), who has a fine record after a break and looks well handicapped judged on his third at Exeter in November. He looks the one to beat. Recent C&D winner Canyon City completes the shortlist.

A market move for one of the newcomers would be significant, with Montgomery appealing the most of them on paper, but OUTLAW PETER found only a smart prospect too strong on his debut and may well go one better on his first start for Paul Nicholls. Kicksaftersix is an each-way alternative.

The answer to a tricky puzzle could be ALBERIC at the foot of the weights. The selection ran his best race for Nick Williams on his final start and looks open to further improvement for his new stable. In an open race the dangers are headed by Admiral Balko, Colden’s Dream, Jesuitique and Jakamani in that order.

This may turn into a match. Grace A Vous Enki is an interesting French recruit for the Nicholls yard and may make a successful British debut but COLORADO DOC, five years his senior, will be no pushover if in the same sort of form that saw him win a handicap chase in the spring.
