13:15 – Methag
Island Mahee has finished runner-up in novice events in her last two starts and is strongly respected back in a handicap, but slight preference is for METHAG who had an excuse when stepped back up to 2m7f last time and is well treated off 5lb lower than for her near miss in this race last year. The other one on the shortlist is West End Lady, who is a half-sister to a 2m4f-3m jumps winner and is a possible improver upped to this trip on her return to action.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
13:45 – Burrows Diamond
Authorizo got back in the groove at Kelso last time and is respected in his bid to make it 3-6 over fences, while Away At Dawn was a creditable second at Warwick last week and should give it another good shot off the same mark here. However, the vote goes to Sue Smith’s 6yo BURROWS DIAMOND, who found plenty of improvement with her two hurdle wins in the spring and is a big player again if she can pick up where she left off on this switch to chasing.
14:20 – Gladiatorial
Top of the list is the generally progressive GLADIATORIAL, who recorded his second win when landing the odds in good style at Cartmel and just about sets the standard under a double penalty here. The main danger is another dual hurdle winner in Bellaney Gem, who went close in a handicap last time and will be fine on this drop back in trip. Readysteadybeau has a good target to aim at on his hurdling debut but this well-bred 5yo showed promise in bumpers last season and needs checking in the market on his return.
14:55 – Real Armani
Doldrum Bay would be the choice on good ground but with rain forecast it’s probably best to side with REAL ARMANI, in the hope he’ll be ready to do himself justice after some time out. Breaking The Ice might be high in the weights now but don’t dismiss Otello Moor, who is bred to leave his hurdling form behind.
15:30 – Glinger Flame
Last year’s winner GLINGER FLAME defends his crown from a 2lb lower mark and, having run perfectly well on the outing before last month’s unfortunate mishap, he gets the nod. Sheriff Garrett has already won twice over C&D this season and went very close to adding to his haul here last time. Bavington Bob made an excellent start to his handicap career in March and is also considered.
16:05 – Graystown
The safest option is GRAYSTOWN (nap), who runs this track so well and he’s in better form than most of these. Scots Sonnet could be the danger on his chasing debut after winning so well off the same mark over hurdles last time. Cash Again would appreciate rain, whereas Tokaramore would not.
16:40 – Rivabodiva
Norley ran well in defeat on his handicap debut two months ago and remains very lightly raced, while it’s also very easy to build a strong case for last-time-out C&D winner Abington Park, who could have more to offer on just his third start for Alex Hales. However, it might be worth chancing veteran mare RIVABODIVA, who has become unreliable but runs this track very well, comes here fresh and has slipped to an attractive mark.
