14:10 Ffos Las – Aldbourne

A low grade nursery handicap in which not too many of the 11 entries are hiding their true talent from the assessor, but the top weight could very well take another step forward which he will undoubtedly have to in order to defy a mark of 72. To be fair, the son of Awtaad has shown enough promise over six and then seven furlongs to be a force at this level.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

But the key to Aldbourne’s chance here is the extra furlong on this wide open galloping track. The selection was tapped for toe on his last two starts at Epsom and then in a highly competitive class two handicap at Goodwood, a race which has worked out well. This is a deal easier than that last contest and he is taken to give the weight away to the likes of the unexposed Haunted Dream and Mezzanotte.

15:10 Ffos Las – Voltaic

I had one of my biggest bets of the year on this quirky, yet talented five-year-old at Wolverhampton two outings back with the make up of the race firmly in his favour that day. However, despite getting the solid pace he needs in his races, the 12/1 shot was positioned way too far out of his ground by George Downing. It was only rounding the home turn that the partnership began to make significant progress, but by then the bird had flown in the form of the red hot and in form Sky Blue Thinking (winner again since).

For some reason the handicapper deemed it acceptable to drop Voltaic a pound for that eye catching contest and he showed that running to be all wrong by pushing the well treated Spanish Mane to a length and a quarter in a slightly better contest at Leicester last time out. Set to race off the very same mark of 59 here, the Tony Carroll trained charge has obvious claims and if Downing can get him hidden in behind horses early on off a solid pace, thereafter expect the stiff uphill finish to play to his strengths in the closing 100 yards.

15:35 Curragh – Barrington Court

Jessie Harrington’s team have been on a tremendous run of form of late and her seven-year-old mare Barrington Court can keep that good sequence going in this Group Three Loughbrown Stakes over two miles. Maybe she was biting off a bit more than she could chew in the Irish St Leger last month, but ultimately it simply wasn’t a stiff enough test of stamina for the daughter of Mastercraftsman.

Held up at the back of the pack in a race run at a stop-start pace, she was at first snaffled for room when she made her bid for glory three furlongs out, but kept on strongly once back on an even keel in the closing stages to be beaten a shade over four lengths by Twilight Payment. This if anything looks a slightly easier assignment and twinned with the extra quarter mile off a more honest pace I expect her to land a career seventh win from only 19 outings.

The biggest danger could come in the form of the lightly raced four-year-old Lismore. Henry De Bromhead’s charge saw off that good yardstick Ranch Hand in the Henry II Stakes at Sandown Park back in April and has a good record fresh. Search For A Song, disappointing when going for a three timer in the Irish Leger, should be back to her peak physically now and also rates a danger if she retains the majority of her old ability.

16:05 Curragh – Arthurian Flame

I love a big field handicap at this fairest of Irish tracks and this Tesora Vita Ladies Trophy Handicap fits the bill nicely. Jockey-ship will quite obviously play a major part in deciding the outcome of this valuable race and in Lisa O’Neill we have one of the very best in the field and crucially she is on board a fairly straightforward mount here.

The six-year-old found the mile and a half at Limerick way too sharp back in April and on his last start on the flat was then caught out by a moderate pace at Galway over a mile and three quarters. Back over a stiff 12 furlongs here and with plenty of pace in the race, Lisa will be able to get her long striding mount into a lovely rhythm and then set him rolling from some way out as hopefully the front runners come to the end of their tether.

Last a winner on the level off a rating of 94, Arthurian Flame is able to race off a mark of 88 here and critically comes here fresh which will also enhance his claims. Of course in such a massive field there are more than several dangers including the top weight and recent Clonmel winner Takarengo and, at a bigger price, the Philip Byrne trained Out On A Friday.
