This is probably a good race but MASHAAER is hard to oppose after entering a thousand notebooks at Ascot a fortnight ago when coming from last to split two fillies with Group-race potential. Mellow Yellow is another who showed distinct promise first time out and, as the only one of these entered in the Fillies’ Mile, appeals as the most likely danger. Moon De Vega and Delphinus can also be expected to leave their initial efforts behind.
Madame Tantzy defends her title on the back of a return to winning ways at Goodwood and has yet to run a bad race on either of the Newmarket tracks, so there’s plenty to like about her prospects. However, MOBADRA might just be too progressive after winning at Haydock in the style of a filly with bundles more to offer, and she looks well handicapped at any rate given the subsequent exploits of those she beat. Anghaam should welcome a return to turf and she’s third best.
The eyes are drawn towards Mayaas and Rich Waters, with both horses now gelded after absences and potentially well handicapped on their peak efforts. It will be intriguing to see what the market makes of them, as either could quite easily win. As things stand, though, the suggestion is DASHING DICK, who is about as reliable as they come and his prominent style of racing is well suited to Newmarket (has finished runner-up on both courses). The next best is Royal Musketeer who is worth a shot at 7f.
Toussarok will no doubt attempt to keep things simple again and off what remains a perfectly good mark he could take a bit of beating in his current form. However, Newmarket can take some knowing and course form brings Equiano Springs and MY STYLE into the picture at greater odds. Both are dangerously handicapped, but it is last year’s runner-up who has been showing the most encouragement this season.
Some familiar faces from the staying circuit lock horns once more but TURNPIKE TRIP is one of the exceptions and he appeals most. The Irish challenger may be best known for his useful jumping exploits these days but it was an encouraging return that he made to Flat action a fortnight ago and Newmarket should suit him better than Down Royal. Live Your Dream has had a good season and might well improve again for this even sterner stamina test, while Mancini is another entitled to strong consideration.

Some unexposed fillies to consider who could be quite a bit better than they have shown thus far. The step up in trip looks a positive move for GAL WONDER, who was denied a clear run before staying on for fifth over 1m1f at Sandown on last month’s handicap debut. The lightly raced 4yo Tarroob is feared most on her first start since wind surgery, while Sammarr impressed on her debut last December and is an interesting candidate despite her odds-on defeat last time out in February.
Mercurius Power is sure to be a popular option on the back of his good sequence of form and with Simon Walker snapped up by Andrew Balding, but don’t dismiss BALGAIR (nap) off the very same mark as when winning this last year. His final run in late June may have been poor, but not his previous one at Redcar when he was unlucky not to be seriously involved in one of that track’s feature handicaps. First Dance and Luna Magic are others for the shortlist.
