This is a real mix of those who have performed well this year but may be getting a little weary, while others return after a break and may just be a little fresher.
Hurricane Ivor won the super competitive Portland handicap at Doncaster last weekend and has the look of a sprinter. He is built like a tank and travelled so easily through that contest that he looks one to follow. He is on the upgrade and is definitely the one I want to be with here.
Khaadem had lots of question marks about him prior to winning last week at Doncaster also. He certainly rattled through that race, but this is tougher and he may not find it so easy.
William Haggas’ Al Aasy has started favourite in all four of his races this term but has only won twice – seeming to throw away winning chances in the other two. This 1m 3f trip could be perfect for him though so I’ll stick with him. I was working at Windsor when Solid Stone won under a brilliant ride by Richard Kingscote to boss the race. If his has things his own way again that will put pressure on Al Aasy.
I am taking a punt on this son of Kingman King Leonidas, as he has not run for 457 days. I’d imagine that his trainer John Gosden will have him ready to rock and roll after that layoff and looked a horse to follow when twice winning at Newmarket before being sixth at Ascot in the Group 3 Jersey Stakes last season. Frankie Dettori is riding in Canada this weekend, so Rab Havlin takes over in the saddle.
Sam Cooke finally got it together when winning a competitive handicap last time at York and this is another step up. Aramaic seemed to like the ground at York also for Team Haggas who are having a really good season.
Kevin Ryan is having a really good season and it looks like Biesla has been targeted at this race again after running reasonably well in it last season when ninth. Regular rider Silvestre de Sousa is banned which means Kevin Stott comes in for the ride. Ground conditions are not a problem and he is now racing off what looks a very reasonable mark. The top weight Summerghand is another who could run well having won a Stewards Cup before, but a career high handicap mark is the issue. It’s hard for the older horses when they are giving weight away to the three and four year olds.
He finished third to Native Trail In the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket and the winner franled the form with an impressive success in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh last weekend. That form now looks really strong. Dhabab is smart and Rab Havlin gets on really well with him as he again deputises for Frankie.
