KINGDOM COME cost a whopping £500,000 at the breeze-ups earlier this year and shaped promisingly on debut at Newbury last month, but his inexperience caught him out after he travelled like the best horse in the race. He seems sure to build on that initial experience – maybe markedly so – and he looks very interesting on his second start. There are some interesting newcomers from big stables on show, though, headed by Bay of Honour and Kennet.
A fascinating listed event, but the Marcus Tregoning-trained RIBHI looked a smart colt in the making when powering clear late in the day on his debut at Salisbury last month and he is fancied to take this step up in class in his stride with the step up to seven furlongs expected to suit. Hoo Ya Mal also caught the eye when a ready scorer in a hot maiden at York and is feared most, although Newmarket-scorer Razzle Dazzle and Gimcrack-fifth Eldrickjones can’t be ruled out either.
ARMOR created an excellent impression when winning the Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood in July, displaying a brilliant turn of foot and looking a colt destined for the top level. He failed to confirm that impression upped in trip when only fourth in the Prix Morny at Deauville last time, still having every chance inside the final furlong but just not as strong in the finish as the three who finished in front of him. The return to a bare five furlongs will suit now and he sets a good standard on his Molecomb form. This is a pretty quick turnaround for Corazon eight days on from her Longchamp win but she’s very progressive and is feared most.
He’s not the banker of years gone by but it’s hard to get away from STRADIVARIUS, who showed he’s still well up for a fight when coming out on top in a memorable battle with Spanish Mission at York three weeks ago. Connections of Trueshan are presumably monitoring the forecast, but he will be a huge threat if the rain does arrive.
RHYTHMIC INTENT was below form at Goodwood in July but wasted no time getting back to form when catching the eye in a competitive handicap at York last time. He wasn’t suited by how the race developed, outpaced over two furlongs out in a field that was strung out despite the tempo not being that quick, and not getting the clearest of runs when making progress inside the final furlong. He is still on a fair mark and won’t be bothered if the rain arrives, so there is plenty to like about his chance in a wide-open handicap. Sevenna Star has shaped with much more encouragement for his shrewd yard of late and is another to consider.
There are plenty in with chances here, too, but the pick is CHAIRMANOFTHEBOARD, who has now slipped 1 lb below his last winning mark and shaped very well at Thirsk last time. He was slowly into stride and met some trouble in-running over a furlong out before finishing well under a hands-and-heels ride. He stays a mile well enough, so this extended six furlongs won’t be a problem, and he is a handicapper to keep on side at present. Kimifive has also been given a chance by the handicapper and is feared most.
The three-year-olds look the ones to focus on here and SEA LA ROSA is the one to side with as she wasn’t suited by the test of speed over a mile and a quarter at York last time. She has already won over this trip and remains on a good mark, so she makes a fair bit of appeal, especially with a capable claimer taking 5 lb off. Thousand Oaks beat a next-time-out winner at Newmarket in July and is another to consider.
