The filly MARGARET DUMONT (nap) was a cracking second over C&D in the Northumberland Vase and, having been in fair form on turf since, can come out on top today with the return to AW in her favour. Monsieur Lambrays may well have won at Nottingham last time if he’d had a clear run and he’s feared most, ahead of Raymond who likes it here and ran well at Carlisle last time.
Again inclined to pull hard when just edged out of it in a messy small-field affair two weeks ago, MUSHIRIF looks to have been found the ideal opening off the same mark back on the AW. The progressive Eye Knee could prove his main danger.
The lightly raced Bluetech and recent Carlisle winner Libby Ami are unproven over tonight’s longer trip. Merci Percy remains open to improvement for a yard in better form lately but the progressive JOHNNY BOOM, who’s won three of his last four on turf and gone 18lb up the weights, gets the nod.
My Silent Song has shown promise on her first two starts and has the best form, but the standard she sets isn’t particularly high and she takes on some interesting newcomers. Top of the list is the William Haggas-trained MELLOW YELLOW, who is entered in the Fillies’ Mile and whose dam was a two-time Group 3 winner. Second choice is Flora Finch for Roger Varian, while the Karl Burke-trained Gifted Gold could also go well.
No fewer than eight of the 14 enter nursery company having failed to make the frame in three previous runs, so there’s not a huge amount to go on and the market should tell a tale. Of those to have shown something, CLAIM TO FAME should appreciate the stiffer test on his AW debut and is preferred to Edge Nibras.
A stereotypical late-season maiden featuring a longstanding loser in Spiritofthenorth, who’s been turned over at 4-1 or shorter on eight occasions, a standard-setter who’s returning from a lengthy absence in WILD LION, whose two runs last summer have worked out well, and one who showed some promise in a weak race on debut in Willard Creek.
An improver since dropped to 5f and fitted with blinkers, Glorious Rio is chasing a fourth win in a little over a month and isn’t taken on lightly upped a fair 2lb, but ROMAN ENCOUNTER could offer some value against him. Now a stone lower than at the start of the year, she’s run well in two course starts and her latest Beverley effort is readily excused. Debawtry is another with obvious claims.
Things have clicked for the 3yo filly TRIPLE JAYE, who made it two wins in a row with an easy victory at Musselburgh last time, and she can land the hat-trick. Tanasoq won over C&D in June and could be a big danger now back down in distance, while Attaboy Roy is on a handy mark if benefiting from the first-time blinkers.
