A super Saturday with eight races across Haydock, Ascot and Kempton. Here are my best five.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
Haydock 13:45 – Lord Glitters
I’ll start with the Group 3 Superior Mile at the Lancashire track and the legend that is Lord Glitters. He has now won 9 times and £1.8 million in prize money including a win earlier this year at Meydan in Dubai which was a Group One contest.
Lord Glitters has performed with real credit, including when second at York last time and this looks a perfect opportunity for him to get back into the winners’ enclosure. My Oberon is the obvious danger but he is held on running in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury earlier this season.
Kempton 14:40 – Hukum
Jim Crowley has chosen to go to Kempton on Saturday to ride Hukum in this Group 3 race over 1m 4f. He has been a real flag bearer for is trainer Owen Burrows and continues to go from strength-to-strength. He has beaten a few of the opposition already and with no significant turnaround in the weights for them, it is hard to oppose him.
Haydock 14:55 – Noble Masquerade
This son of Sir Percy won nicely at Windsor and is a four-year-old on the up. The set up in trip seems to be the making of him. He is versatile regarding ground conditions too so gets the nod over the top-weight Global Storm, who looks a big danger. It’s notable that Hollie Doyle takes over in the saddle on Noble Masquerade as his normal pilot, William Buick, rides Global Storm instead.
He finished in midfield in the Ebor Handicap at York but has run some good races this season, including when winning at Newmarket over this 1m 6f trip and on similar quick ground.

Ascot 15:10 – Champagne Piaf
Was highly tried as a two-year-old for trainer Gary Moore and ran in some nice races. He got a little lost at Goodwood on his seasonal debut but showed the benefit of that run with a comfortable success at Windsor on quick ground last time out. He is in against some progressive and unexposed types now from all the big Newmarket yards, but hopefully Champagne Piaf still has a bit up his sleeve.
Ascot 15:45 – Mystery Smiles
I watched Mystery Smiles fall out of the stalls when ridden by William Carver at this track in July. Considering the ground he lost at the start, he still ran a hell of a race, despite finishing sixth of six that day. Mystery Smiles finished third in the Craven Stakes and connections thought enough of him to then run in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket. He was ultimately well beaten, but he’s no mug and this contest is well within his reach. I will be having a saver each-way on the consistent but frustrating Cliffs of Capri also.
