GANGWAY, Astaroth, Zain Nibras and Whispering Winds have all recently proven they can be very competitive off their current handicap marks. Gangway, who is slightly ahead of the handicapper, is fancied most.
George Boughey’s newcomer Dirtyoldtown has very good credentials on paper, but EVOCATIVE SPARK stuck to his task pretty well when fourth in a useful Yarmouth novice 16 days ago and might put his experience to good use. Out From Under also made a very promising debut, but that was on heavy ground and we probably won’t see the best of him until he moves up in trip.
The most obvious answer is JULIE JOHNSTON (NAP), who arrested her decline and went very close off today’s mark at Musselburgh a week ago. Luxy Lou sports first-time cheekpieces today and will be dangerous if she gets a clear run this time. Silk Tie and South Carolina both return to turf after good all-weather runs and are also considered.
Percy’s Pride will find this much easier than her last two assignments and is not yet fully exposed, but she has some quirks and is not without risk. Ready preference is for TRIPLE NICKLE, who has looked as good as ever this year and will probably make the running here.
Archie Watson’s new recruit French Rose showed some fairly useful form over middle-distance trips in France and looks interesting on her British debut. But, the one to beat is probably ALHEZABR, who was third in a good-quality Nottingham novice on his debut in April.
Desert Gulf bids to complete a hat-trick and is not opposed lightly, but it’s hard to get away from his unbeaten rival ASJAD – who looks a very good prospect.
It’s reasonable to assume that Retrospect will give another good account, but the suggestion is STREET JESTER – who won off today’s mark in 2019 and shaped with significant promise when returning from a long absence here this month. Jack Bean has made a disappointing start to his three-year-old season, but Sir Mark Prescott may yet find the key to him.
