Day 2 of the York Ebor meeting gets under way on ITV with the Group 2 Lowther over 6f for juveniles. SANDRINE should be shorter in the betting in my opinion and looks very hard to beat. My only slight worry is that York is a speed track and she looks a strong stayer. That said, she was terrific in the Albany at Royal Ascot and equally so in the Duchess of Cambridge at Newmarket. She is a big player for David Probert and Andrew Balding.
Now a valuable sales race for two-year-olds over 6f and it’s very hard to sort this out. WINGS OF WAR might go well for Adam Kirby, the Derby winner, and the excellent Clive Cox. The son of Dark Angel, who cost £140,000, made a promising debut at Leicester and then hacked up at Nottingham. It’s hard to know whether he can run to a mark of about 90+ here, but if he can then he will take some stopping provided a high draw is not a negative.
A heritage handicap here over 1m. LA TRINIDAD is up 12lb for two York wins and has a horrible draw in stall 20, so there’s plenty that is against him scoring for Roger Fell and Oisin Murphy. However, the champion is a great booking and I imagine he can drop my selection out and hope to come with a late thrust. The improver stays this trip very strong and off a fast pace his way of running might be an advantage.
The big one of the day is the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks over 1m4f. It’s impossible to oppose short priced favourite SNOWFALL who is unbeaten this season here and in two Classics via the Epsom and Irish Oaks. She gets weight from her rivals and looks an absolute star for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore. If Wonderful Tonight runs it will be hard for her to give nearly a stone away. So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
