13:55 Poet

Roger Varian has his string in fine form at present and Poet can provide him with another winner. Poet comes from a successful family and he made an encouraging debut when fourth at Windsor last month. That form is the best on offer and Poet is entitled to improve for the experience, so he should prove difficult to beat.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

14:30 Buoyant

Buoyant was readily put in his place when runner-up to Ehraz at Ascot last time but it would be little surprise were that rival to take high rank in Group 1s later in the season. It is worth taking a positive view of Buoyant’s performance as he pulled four and three-quarter lengths clear of the remainder and that form looks the strongest on offer here. That was only his second start so he is entitled to take another step forward.

15:05 Under Curfew

Under Curfew has been in the form of his life this summer and completed the four-timer when successful at Chepstow last month. All four wins have come under good-value claimer Mollie Phillips and she is back in the saddle again. A 4 lb rise in the weights may not be enough to stop Under Curfew from making it five in a row.

15:40 Ariel

Ariel wasn’t able to complete the four-timer at Doncaster last time but he found only a progressive, subsequent winner too strong, so it was still a career-best performance on Timeform’s figures. He still looks well treated after edging up 3 lb for his excellent effort at Doncaster and, given the sharp upward curve he is tracking, he may not have shown everything he has to offer.

16:15 Gloria Mundi

Gloria Mundi was only seventh in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot last time but she shaped better than that result would suggest on just her third outing. Gloria Mundi looked comfortable at that lofty level and for much of the straight seemed likely to finish closer, but she was unable to sustain the effort close home. The drop back in trip to a mile and a quarter (from a mile and a half) ought to suit her well, and she remains open to plenty of improvement after only three starts.

Salisbury-Races

16:50 Modestus

Modestus has a good Juddmonte pedigree – he is a half-brother to the high-class Time Test – and it would be little surprise were he to prove better than this opening mark of 69. Modestus has seemingly been a slow-learner but it’s still early days and his pedigree offers hope that he has a bigger effort in his locker. The application of cheekpieces on this handicap debut might eke out a bit of improvement and he has a compelling profile.

17:25 Victorious Night

Victorious Night bumped into a potentially useful rival when runner-up in a novice at Ffos Las last week but he should go close here if replicating that sort of form. Victorious Night made little impact on his two previous attempts in handicaps but he has been given a chance by the assessor and looks on a fair mark based on his Ffos Las effort.
