ITV coverage Saturday starts with a handicap over 5f for the Shergar Cup. KING OF STARS could not cope with heavy conditions last time out when fancied but back on a decent surface, he has every chance. Trained by Mick Appleby, King of Stars was a fine second at Beverley and Newmarket on his previous two starts and this is exactly his cup of tea. He can make the running if need be.
Now a handicap over 2m. CALL MY BLUFF is edging up the handicap and might find this a step too far. That said, he only just does enough when winning and might also be able to get the hat-trick up for Dominic Ffrench-Davies. He’s a proper stayer and scored nicely at Nottingham and Chester. He’s relatively lightly raced and should go well.
A handicap here over 1m4f. GROUP ONE POWER is very much in the grip of the handicapper and has to win this off a mark of 89 having been beaten off 86 and 88 three times. That said, the Andrew Balding runner is surely hard to keep out the frame and has good course form over this distance. He should place at the very least.
Now a handicap over 1m. FANTASTIC FOX should get a good pace to run at here which may help him for Roger Varian and Sylvestre de Sousa. He ran well behind Guru – a winner of this column – at Ascot last time and stays on the same mark. He stays well too.
A handicap over 1m. REVICH is not a well handicapped horse but equally he’s not impossible to see running well here for Richard Spencer. He’s got plenty of form at the track and stays this trip even though he’s often over 7f. That 1m form includes a fourth in the Spring Cup at Newbury off a mark of 96 and he’s a bit lower here.
A Group 3 here in the Sweet Solera for juveniles over 7f. The one to beat here must be WILD BEAUTY, who looked decent at Haydock and Newbury before chasing home Inspiral in a Listed event at Sandown last time out. She kept on well that day despite still looking green and being closer to home might suit her.
This is a handicap over 1m4f. BARN OWL looks like a horse who has been gagging to go a bit further and he gets his chance here for the Beckhampton maestro Roger Charlton and Nat Rothschild. A win at Ripon was followed by a second at Sandown and on both occasions and this trip looked like the right way to go. He has a big chance if that is the case.
A handicap over 6f. POPMASTER has a big weight to carry but he’s improving fast for enthusiastic owner Laurence Bellman and trainer Ed Walker. He ran a cracker when third at Newmarket over 6f and then again when winning at Doncaster. He’s up another 5lb here but might be able to cope with the rise.
Another Group 3 here in the Rose of Lancaster over an extended 1m2f. The one to beat here has to be REAL WORLD for the excellent Saeed bin Suroor and Marco Ghiani. The Royal Hunt winner stepped up in great style to score in Listed company at Newbury last time and is turning into a very useful performer.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
