CONFIDE made a pleasing start for this yard when second at Dundalk in February, proving at least as good as ever on his first outing since leaving David O’Meara. This will be his first race after another five months on the sidelines, but he has gone well fresh in the past and has a good-value claimer taking over in the saddle. This looks a good opportunity for him to resume winning ways.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
16:15 – Beleaguerment
BELEAGUERMENT gained a deserved victory with the cheekpieces back on at Gowran Park 12 days ago, staying on well to land the spoils by three quarters of a length. This will be tougher following a 6 lb rise in the weights, but he has won from even higher marks in the past and should mount a bold follow-up bid if continuing in the same rich vein of form.
16:45 – Changingoftheguard
CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD shaped as if needing the experience when fourth on his debut over this course and distance two weeks ago, doing well under the circumstances to be beaten only three lengths. He looks sure to improve with that run under his belt and it’s potentially significant that trainer Aidan O’Brien has won four of the last seven renewals of this maiden.
17:20 – Tarnawa
TARNAWA is impossible to oppose on her belated return to action. She went unbeaten in four starts in 2020 and produced a very smart performance when last seen winning the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland in November. That form comfortably sets the standard in this Group 3, so victory here should prove little more than a formality ahead of the stiffer tasks which lie ahead.
17:50 – Handel
HANDEL shaped better than the bare result when third on his latest outing at Killarney, doing his best work at the finish after being forced to wait for a gap entering the final two furlongs. Still beaten only two and a quarter lengths, he will be suited by the slightly longer trip here and rates a confident selection to get off the mark at the sixth attempt.
18:20 – Joven
JOVEN very much caught the eye when eighth in a big-field handicap over this course and distance last month. He passed the post less than two lengths behind the winner and looked unlucky not to finish closer still after being left with too much to do and meeting trouble. He can race from the same mark here and is well worth another chance to prove himself a well-handicapped horse.
18:55 – Freepark
FREEPARK showed improved form when third on his handicap debut over this course and distance four weeks ago, staying on strongly to be beaten just half a length in a bunched finish. He is 1 lb lower in the weights here and looks sure to give another good account, with further progress not out of the question given his lightly-raced profile.
19:30 – Alghazaal
ALGHAZAAL could be worth chancing from a career-low mark in the finale. He produced one of his better efforts on turf when fourth at Ballinrobe last time and the application of a first-time tongue strap could also unlock a bit of improvement in a race of fine margins.
