With the forecast rain a worry for both Suns Up Guns Up and Critique, it might be worth chancing FORT DENISON, a rare Flat runner for respected jumps trainer Venetia Williams. His current ability in this sphere is very hard to gauge but he’s well handicapped on his old Irish form and interest in him is heightened by the booking of Oisin Murphy. Second choice is Hammy End, who disappointed last time and doesn’t often win but can usually be relied upon to run his race.
The most obvious answer is the filly TREGONY, who displayed a good turn of foot to seize control at Doncaster recently and is now bidding for her fourth win in a row. Bascule is very unexposed on turf and his strong-finishing second in a 1m novice here in June makes him of significant interest but he has a point to prove after a lesser effort on Tapeta two weeks ago.
Arguably the most interesting runner is HURAIZ (nap), who is yet to hit peak form for his canny new trainer this year but qualified for this valuable series final with a very respectable fourth over an inadequate 5f here two weeks ago and is now very well handicapped on some of last year’s 6f/7f form for Mark Johnston. Edraak has made very good progress this year and will be feared if the ground is no worse than good. Capote’s Dream, Operatic and Stewards’ Cup fourth Total Commitment also make the shortlist, while Chairmanoftheboard is a more speculative option to consider.
Some very well bred fillies feature in this novice race. Fantalope chased home a useful Godolphin colt at Chelmsford last month and that is arguably the best piece of form on offer here but she’s unraced on turf and slight preference is for C&D runner-up FUTURE, who was a very expensive yearling and is open to any amount of further improvement.
He’s no longer the force of old but THE DALEY EXPRESS is yet to run a bad race this season and can capitalise upon a new career-low mark here. Seneca Chief is excused his last two defeats and can pose a threat if the ground is good or quicker. If conditions deteriorate, Saras Hope will shoot up the pecking order.
A strong case can easily be made for hat-trick-seeker Glen Esk, who gained the first of his two wins over this C&D, but it’s well worth considering SAGAUTEUR, who didn’t get home after pulling too hard in the early stages at Newbury last month but still ran well there and is another 2lb lower here. Photograph is next on the list.
