Alfaadhel looked a very bright prospect when winning two of his last three starts, admittedly at a lower level, before stepping up significantly in grade at the Royal meeting. He seemed to be in the right place towards the rear as that’s where the eventual winner came from, but he fluffed his lines somewhat and didn’t seem to travel with the same fluency. He may have been put off by racing in a big field for the first time. He should’ve learnt from that and the Roger Varian team still feel he is well treated at present.
Asymmetric is another who looked really promising going through the grades at a lesser level and just found himself a little bit further back than ideal, before launching a ferocious challenge late on in Group 2 company at the July meeting. He just failed and given a better passage early on, he would’ve been coming in here for the Richmond Stakes unbeaten. The Alan King yard had their first Group 1 victory on the Flat on Tuesday and this can be another big win for the squad.
Sir Lucan came over for the Sandown Classic Trial early on in the season and ran no race whatsoever, even allowing for the fact that the form behind the first four home that day – where the Epsom Derby winner Adayar was second – has turned out rock solid. He was just beaten too far that day for it to be his true running.
He proved it to be all wrong when winning last time from his stable mate Wordsworth in gutsy fashion. On ratings, he has it all to do but has a boatload of untapped potential.
Lady Bowthorpe was very unlucky not to get that evasive Group 1 success under her belt last time at HQ. She was always being pushed wide before launching her challenge down the centre of the track but it was too little too late behind the winner Snow Lantern and the placed horses.
If she stays this couple of furlongs and keeps the speed and finishing kick she has over the mile, she’s going to take her form to another level. She will be towards the top of the market for the Champion Stakes at Ascot later in the season if she wins.

I’m interested in how the handicapper has arrived at a mark of 72 for the Andrew Balding-trained Aldbourne. While he was fifth at Salisbury, the winner that day has run well at Chester off a mark of 91 and the third has come out and bolted up since. Hollie Doyle is booked to ride and he’s been handed a middle stall position and could be a massive improver on his nursery debut.
He has a light weight to carry – too light for the champion jockey Oisin Murphy who rides the stablemate Robasta instead.
Twilight Calls has won two from three this season at Doncaster and Newmarket and is clearly on the up. He has David Probert in the saddle to help him along too.

The booking of Ryan Moore takes the eye and Vintage Fashion is related to some very decent group performers for the Mark Johnston yard.
