NAGANO shaped better than the bare result when sixth in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. That was his handicap debut and he showed more than enough to suggest he is on a good mark, doing well to be beaten only two and a quarter lengths after being badly hampered over a furlong out. Still unexposed at the trip, he remains open to more improvement and is fancied to confirm the promise of last time to resume winning ways.
VALERIA MESSALINA produced her best effort of the season when second in a Group 3 at Fairyhouse last time, sticking to her task well to pass the post only two lengths behind the smart winner. She seems to be coming to the boil and a repeat of the form she showed when second in this race 12 months ago is likely to put her right in the mix once again. The fine form of the Jessica Harrington yard (four winners from last 11 runners) also gives cause for plenty of optimism.
FEARBY showed much improved form to win a listed race at Sandown last time, powering clear in the final furlong to land the spoils by five lengths. The timefigure provides plenty of substance to the form and Fearby rates very much the one to beat in this Group 3 according to Timeform’s weight-adjusted ratings. With further progress on the cards, he rates a confident selection to take the step up in grade in his stride to complete a hat-trick.
POETIC FLARE has thrived on a busy campaign and produced his best effort yet when winning the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last time. He showed a sparkling turn of foot on that occasion to record a dominant win by four and a quarter lengths from Lucky Vega, beating that rival by much further than he had when also winning the 2000 Guineas earlier in the season. Poetic Flare is clearly the pick of the three-year-old milers and, in the absence of Palace Pier, there doesn’t appear to be an older horse with his talent in the line-up either.

FLOTUS has met with defeat on both starts since making an impressive winning debut at this course in May, but she still showed fairly useful form when sixth in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket last time. She once again showed plenty of early speed before tiring late on, so the drop back to five furlongs here could be in her favour. She takes a significant drop in grade, too, and there is little doubt she brings the best form to the table.
ACHELOIS was taking on her elders for the first time when regaining the winning thread with plenty to spare at Ascot earlier this month. She was always close to the pace and quickly asserted after being produced to lead inside the final two furlongs, ultimately winning by two and three quarters lengths in comfortable fashion. This will be tougher from a 6 lb higher mark, but she should have more to offer now stepping up in trip. She looks a filly to follow both today and beyond.
SUNSET BREEZE proved better than ever in first-time blinkers when second at Newcastle last time, losing out only narrowly despite hanging left inside the final furlong. That was a useful performance and it’s not impossible that he could yet have a bigger effort in the locker, representing the Sir Mark Prescott yard which renowned for improving horses over time. Sunset Breeze is only 3 lb higher in the weights than last time and looks sure to mount another bold bid.
