Enjoying very good year, winning 3 times in Ireland in spring. Fine second to Wonderful Tonight in Hardwicke over C&D before making breakthrough at Group 1 level in France last time.
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore Age: 4 Weight: 9st 4lbs
Developed into a high-class filly last term, unbeaten in 1000 Guineas, Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks. Battled well to make it 4 Group 1s in a row in Prince of Wales’s here (1¼m) on return.
Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Jockey: David Egan Age: 4 Weight: 9st 7lbs
French Derby winner at 3 who improved again when landing 2 very valuable pots in Middle East at start of 2021. Off 3 months, shaped as if just needing run in Eclipse recently. Should be spot on now.
Highly progressive on going softer than good, including a C&D Group 1 success on Champions Day last October. Saw off to Broome to win Hardwicke on return and big player if the thunderstorms hit.
Finished 4 lengths behind Adayar in Sandown Classic Trial but much improved since, taking Goodwood listed before collared in the only dying strides by Hurricane Lane (pair clear) in the Irish Derby.
Trainer: Charlie Appleby Jockey: William Buick Age: 3 Weight: 8st 10lbs
Much improved for a truly-run 1½m when an impressive 4½-length winner of Derby at Epsom (good to soft) in June. Bidding to become the first since Galileo in 2001 to complete Derby/King George double.
Timeform Verdict
An intriguing renewal, not least as the Derby winner takes part for only the second time in the last 10 years, and it’s Epsom-hero ADAYAR who gets the nod, with this year’s Blue Riband boosted by the subsequent Group 1 successes of third-placed Hurricane Lane. Love is feared most if the ground stays on the quick side, but if the heavens do open Wonderful Tonight could provide the main threat.
