This represents a golden opportunity for MISTY AYR to get off the mark, and it’s hard to envisage her failing to deliver on the back of highly respectable efforts at Royal Ascot and most recently when second in an Irish listed event. Shamlaan is probably more one for the longer-term and newcomer Lady Raeburn is taken to claim second place prize money.
This race revolves around TANASOQ, who regained the winning thread at Newcastle in June and a sloppy start ultimately proved his undoing when going close at Ayr 11 days ago. He is due to go up 3 lb in the handicap in the future and, with the cheekpieces back on, he should take plenty of beating, providing he’s quicker off the blocks. Mr Trevor’s latest effort represented a step forward and he is preferred to Captain Corcoran for forecast purposes.
WHERE’S JEFF stepped up on his recent efforts to cash in on a reduced mark over course and distance in May and possibly found the race coming too soon when trying to follow up on heavy ground under a penalty at Haydock seven days later. He got back on the up following a longer break at Beverley last time, though, keeping on well after taking up the running inside the final furlong. This rider has been aboard for both of those wins and a subsequent 3 lb rise in the weights leaves him well handicapped on old form. Regal Mirage may give him most to think about.
FROG AND TOAD showed ability in maiden/minor company and progressed as expected when finding only a well-backed rival too strong on handicap debut at Doncaster earlier this month. For all he was no match for the winner, he still left the impression that this mark won’t be beyond him in time, travelling better than most but not having the same change of gear as the winner. The tongue strap goes on now and he remains capable of better. Chinese Spirit and Mikmak should also go well.
Edward Bethell remains in good form and his GAINSBOURG left his previous form behind when finishing third on handicap debut at Ripon last week. He was much shorter than previously in the betting and he arguably should have finished closer, getting caught behind a weakening rival and conceding first run to the two who finished in front of him. He possesses a fair amount of physical scope and is well up to winning a race of this nature. Star Shakeera and Kiskadee look the likeliest dangers.
CAPTAIN VALLO attracted support and showed improved form on his return to action following a breathing operation over course and distance last month and ran to a similar level when again placed in a first-time hood at Carlisle last week. He looked outpaced on that occasion so it is no surprise the hood is dispensed with now and he appears to have the most potential in this field.
