Charlie Appleby is enjoying a good meeting and just like on Friday, CALM SKIES is expected to give him a winning start in the first race here. She made plenty of appeal on paper, but was easy to back, and left the impression she would come on for the run when finishing third to a potentially smart filly over this course and distance last month, not quite having the same turn of foot as that rival in the closing stages. There should be improvement forthcoming now and she can prove too strong for well-bred newcomer Ephrata.
KINGMANIA is proving a most progressive filly, completing a hat-trick in good style at Doncaster last month and, judged by that performance, there’s no reason to think that she has finished improving. She typically travelled fluently before being produced to lead inside the final furlong, hanging badly right once hitting the front but still having plenty in hand at the line. A subsequent 6 lb rise underestimates her and she is expected to maintain her unbeaten record. Riknnah also chases a 4-timer and is feared, along with Samoot.
ROYAL FLEET is unbeaten in two starts and looked potentially smart when powering away from his opposition in a minor event at Yarmouth when last seen in April. He dictated matters from the front that day and readily saw off two next-time-out winners and, while it is a little concerning he has been off the track since, he is potentially thrown in from an opening mark of 93. Royal Fleet is the type of horse who could be plying his trade in pattern company before the season is out and is worth supporting accordingly.
DHABAB was all the rage in the betting for the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, but wasn’t seen to best effect when a never-nearer sixth, inexperience still evident and shaping as if he’ll stay seven furlongs. He’s worth another chance with that form the best on offer and is preferred to Great Max, who is high on the shortlist after his useful effort in the Chesham, while Charlie Appleby has an excellent recent record in this so Native Trail and Private Signal must be respected, too.

The William Haggas-trained AMETIST has gone unbeaten in four runs since his debut and looked to have a fair bit more in the locker when flying home to score over course and distance last time. There’s no doubt he will be suited by a mile when the time comes, but he should get a strong pace to aim at here, and can complete a five-timer at the chief expense of Britannia-hero Perotto, who also saddles a 6lb penalty. Stylish Chelmsford scorer Jumaira Bay enters calculations and Boardman rates a lively outsider too in a cracking handicap.
DRAGON SYMBOL, although demoted in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot last time, underlined his capabilities at this level, and there have been no signs of a chink in his armour as yet, so he gets the marginal vote in a wide-open renewal of this Group 1. Last season’s winner, Oxted, is another obvious danger, while both Starman and Rohaan have similar profiles to the selection in that they arrive firmly on the up, so they warrant a favourable mention, too.
PARACHUTE ran a blinder when third in the very strong King George Handicap at Royal Ascot last time and could prove the answer in the closing race. Fellow three-year-old Oz Legend may have more to come now stepping up in trip and is respected along with recent Newbury third/second Amir Kabir and Duke of Condicote.
