An exciting battle of the generations awaits on Saturday as dual French Classic winner St Mark’s Basilica takes on Saudi Cup winner Mishriff and Champion Stakes victor Addeybb in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park.
El Drama – a Listed winner at Chester in May – completes the field but who are Paddy Power pundits and tipsters backing to win the big race?
Matt Chapman: “The only horse in here with a devastating turn of speed is ST MARK’S BASILICA and I expect him to win for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore. He gets nearly a stone from Mishriff and Addeybb and that should be enough for the Dewhurst, French 2000 and French Derby hero. He’s the only one who can sprint in this field.”
Mick Fitzgerald: “I really like MISHRIFF though who won the French Derby last year and then went to Dubai and won on World Cup night. He would be at deserved winner of this and I think he is the one to deliver.”
Jason Weaver: “It could well prove tactical and the only way that ST MARK’S BASILICA will come under maximum pressure, is if whoever dictates the pace makes this a truly lung busting end-to-end gallop. Our selection has in his possession the best change of gear and that can be used as a potent weapon late in the day.”
Ruby Walsh: “MISHRIFF is a good stayer too. I’m not saying St Marks Basilica won’t stay but it could get tactical for Ryan Moore. With my doubts about the draw, I’m going for Mishriff to take it.”
Frank Hickey: “Ballydoyle’s ST MARK’S BASILICA was a good two-year-old, winning the Dewhurst. He’s won the French Guineas and French Derby this season really impressively, showing a blistering turn of foot. This could develop into a tactical affair and that turn of foot could prove crucial.”
