Newcastle 13:45 – Woven

ITV coverage Saturday starts here with a handicap over 6f. A wide open event. WOVEN doesn’t have much in hand on his handicap mark which is at a hilt of 90. That said, he’s in tremendous form and ran really well when fourth of a large field over this trip at York last time. Michael Dods trains with Connor Beasley on top. Strong each way claims.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

Newmarket 14:05 – Desert Dreamer

At Newmarket ITV starts with this Listed fillies’ event over 6f. A tough heat. DESERT DREAMER didn’t do much in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot but she might be better here back at Newmarket. She won her first two races at HQ and has place claims at least for Stuart Williams and Oisin Murphy.

Newcastle 14:20 – Tabdeed

Now the Group 3 Chipchase over 6f. TABDEED might be worth a few quid each way here for Owen Burrows and David Probert. My hope has some solid Newcastle form and was a fine winner of the Hackwood over 6f at Newbury in July. If he runs up to that he will be hard to beat, although he ran a shocking race subsequently and has been off the track a long time.

Newmarket 14:40 – Logician

Another Listed race here in the Fred Archer over 1m 4f. This is last chance saloon for LOGICIAN as far as I am concerned. The Gosden runner looked a monster when landing the St Leger in 2019 but has problems since when shocking at York and not showing much at Newbury. That latter event was not a disaster and this is very winnable if he’s got any of his old ability left. Robert Havlin is the man who takes the ride.

Newcastle 14:55 – Zeeband

This is the Northumberland Vase Handicap over an extended 2m as a consolation for the Plate. Stamina has to be taken on trust, but I expect a big show each way here from ZEEBAND under Andrea Atzeni for Roger Varian. After just six races my hope is open to masses of improvement and he ran all right on debut this term at Newmarket over 1m6f.

Newmarket 15:15 – Motakhayyel

This is the Group 3 Criterion over 7f. I’ll give an each way chance here to the Richard Hannon runner MOTAKHAYYEL. This trip is ideal for my selection and he wasn’t disgraced when in midfield behind River Nymph in the Victoria Cup at Ascot. At his best he’s a tough sort for Shadwell and Dane O’Neill takes the mount.

Newcastle 15:30 – Australis

The big one in the UK is the Northumberland Plate Handicap over an extended 2m. The top-weight Trueshan will be hard to beat, but I’ll back AUSTRALIS each-way to take advantage of Paddy paying 5 places each-way. It won’t be easy for my selection as he’s 10lb higher than when second in the 2020 renewal. That said, he ran a fine race over a mile and a half at Epsom last time and has a decent racing weight. He also has a good draw to work from and a liking for the surface for trainer Roger Varian and jockey David Egan.

Curragh 15:45 – High Definition

Classic action comes from Ireland in the Group 1 Irish Derby over 1m 4f. I’m all over HIGH DEFINITION for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore. The great, big, colt looked good in his first two runs and then ran third behind Hurricane Lane in the Dante at York. Everything about that run suggested that with this trip and with the experience under his belt he should reverse that form and finally show us what he can do at the top level. This track is ideal.

So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
