Flotus made no mistake on her racecourse debut 27 days ago and it is significant that the team have decided to book Frankie Dettori for her big date at the Royal meeting. That effort will also have brought her forward from a mental and physical perspective. Admittedly she is one of a whole host in here who have a big ticket to improve, but Dettori is in irresistible form.
Alenquer popped up at a massive price on his return to action at Sandown but it didn’t look any fluke whatsoever. He missed his intended start at York which would’ve put him bang in the picture for The Derby and, after a minor injury at home, the yard can be rewarded for their patience, especially as the ground has now come in his favour as well.
Fivethousandtoone was an absolute rocket juvenile last season and, not surprisingly due to his pedigree, the Balding team tried him over no shorter than six furlongs on three occasions and he also ran up at the highest level in the Dewhurst over seven on his final start. It’s a massive ask on his return, but the team have had a fantastic campaign and he may yet be a five-furlong specialist.
Empress Josephine is the only runner in the lineup to have started her racing career in 2021 and has come a remarkably long way in just four races to date. Obviously her late thrust on top of the line got her nose in front where it mattered in the Irish 1000 Guineas under tough conditions. She may well prove better over further in time but, as a sister to the outstanding seven-time Group 1 winner Minding, she’s not to be underestimated.
Prado was always the type to make up into a better three-year-old and she is just starting to grow and strengthen into that impressive frame. Not given a hard time by any stretch of the imagination when she returned here over a mile under quick conditions and that will have put her spot on for this assignment. Any easing in the ground is a bonus and, of course, we have the excellent Jamie Spencer on board for the straight mile test.
Tritonic was second here last year in the Golden Gate handicap to Highland Chief over slightly shorter. He kept on progressing through the season and, being trained by a dual-purpose handler, he went over the obstacles and proved himself very good in that discipline as well. It was a nice pipe opener on his return to the Flat at Chelmsford that will have put him spot-on for this and Alan King books the services of Ryan Moore to give us that added bit of confidence.
Desert Gulf appears to also have been running over the wrong distance in his short career to date and it’s more through natural ability that he has been putting up some solid performances. Back down to the minimum for the first time with Hollie Doyle taking over in the saddle and a featherweight on his back he can prove a totally different proposition now faced with a suitable task. He won’t be too free in this lineup and they should be able to slot him in and finish late. He’s a massive each-way price.
