Olympic Theatre and Red Glory were each suited by the step up to this trip on slow ground when off the mark on their latest starts and their proven ability to handle conditions counts for plenty. SECRET SHADOW’s dam loved this sort of ground, though, and it’s quite possible she’ll improve for tackling it for the first time, having bumped into a well-handicapped winner off this mark last time.
There was plenty to like about KINGMAX’s Newbury debut, when he came home nicely after getting upset at the start, and a good test on this ground should be ideal, with him out of a winning stayer. Today’s extra furlong should suit Nottingham third Sharp Riposte, with Mot And The Messer, whose two successful siblings both went in on their 2yo debuts, an interesting newcomer.
Favourite when one of three to come away at York a fortnight ago, JADHLAAN sets the standard and is preferred to He’s A Gentleman, who shaped nicely on his soft-ground debut this month.
A half-sister to three winners for her yard, including mudlovers Kommander Kirkup and John Kirkup (who runs in the 4.30), HAVAGOMECCA (nap) showed enough on her handicap debut, after a slow start from a wide stall, to sugggest she’s well up to winning off this mark. Big Thanks is another bred to relish the ground, being a brother to the useful three-time heavy-ground winner With Thanks, but there are stable form concerns with him, while Dan De Light’s improvement this spring has come on the AW. Marve is another to consider.
Having finished second in a much more competitive Curragh handicap last weekend, this looks perfect for mud-loving PRETTY BOY FLOYD, who’ll be going up 7lb from Saturday. Three-time course winner Somewhere Secret returns to his favourite track in good form after a Carlisle win early last week and is the obvious danger in a race lacking depth.

Lexington Knight is proven on the ground and is most likely to give his running but he’s becoming expensive to follow and BRINGSTY has potential if more amenable in the first-time hood down in distance. Mashaan is the other with realistic claims but was expensive to follow last autumn.
It’s been a long time since Richard R H B ran well on turf and conditions are a concern, while Red Derek is a maiden after 16 starts who’s done his racing in recent times over further, and Widaad has been beaten a long way in two tries at this trip. SHARPCLIFF is lightly raced and open to a bit of improvement, though, with last Monday’s Leicester fifth giving him decent claims in a weak handicap if he handles the ground.
