Epsom Derby favourite Bolshoi Ballet “ticks a lot of boxes” for next month’s Classic, according to Paddy Power.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained three-year-old scored by 6l in the 1m 2f Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes at Leopardstown on Sunday to race clear at the top of our antepost betting market for the world’s greatest flat race.

New to Paddy Power?

Our Paddy liked what he saw from Bolshoi Ballet and thinks the son of 2001 Derby winner Galileo “looks an Epsom type”.

Speaking on the latest episode of our From The Horse’s Mouth podcast, Paddy said: “I thought people got a bit carried away but when you watch it back, I liked the fact that it took him a few strides to find his turn of foot.

“When they went for him he didn’t just pick up and go which implies stamina will be there in abundance, which is great as a Derby trial. It’s really encouraging and he almost certainly will see out the trip.

“He wasn’t going away by lengths and lengths at the end but he was going away slowly but surely. He won impressively but he ground it out from about three furlongs out. He put the race to bed very quickly and squeezed the life out of the rest of them.

“He looks an Epsom type. He looks relatively straight forward, he was’t pulling, he wasn’t green, it didn’t look like a difficult ride. Epsom is a tough terrain so he should be a well balanced horse. He ticks a lot of boxes.”

Paddy’s top trader Frank Hickey wasn’t singing from the same hymn sheet, however.

“My inkling would be take him on,” Frank said. “There’s a couple yet to go like Wordsworth and High Definition.

“Bolshoi Ballet was good but I thought Mac Swiney was very disappointing. If you take him out of the race then how strong was it? I wouldn’t think it was the strongest.

“It was visually impressive but I’d be wanting to take him on at that price come the first weekend in June.”
