Tiger Roll is set to appear in a handicap hurdle for the first time since April 2016 on Saturday.

The dual Grand National winner has been declared for the Grade B Navan Handicap Hurdle and faces 16 rivals including Duffle Coat, Holymacapony and Anibale Fly.

Tiger Roll did not have a handicap rating in Ireland when his entry was submitted earlier this week but has since been given a hurdle mark of 145, the highest of the runners, which means he has to give weight to the rest of the field.

The booking of 7lb claimer Rob James will help ease the load, however.

It’ll be Tiger Roll’s second run of the season after pulling up in last month’s Grade 2 Many Clouds Chase. February’s Boyne Hurdle has been used as a prep run for Tiger Roll over the last three years so Saturday’s handicap entry represents a change of direction by connections ahead of the Cheltenham Festival.

The five-time Festival winner is second in our antepost betting for the Cross Country Chase behind JP McManus’ new recruit Prengarde. He won last year’s renewal in stunning fashion by reversing the form with 2020 champ Easysland to score by 18l.

Tiger Roll’s chase rating in Britain has been the subject of controversy after being withdrawn from last year’s Grand National, with connections arguing the popular horse’s handicap mark was too high.

The winner of the world’s greatest steeplechase in 2018 and 2019, he was denied an historic hat-trick attempt in 2020 when the race was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. It remains to be seen whether he will be entered for April’s renewal.
