Irish punters have had a fantastic week at the Cheltenham Festival, but one in Shannon, County Clare, has half-a-million reasons to toast trainer Henry De Bromhead. Now there will be a socially distanced celebration somewhere in the South West tonight courtesy of an incredible bet placed more than three months ago.
After a miserable 2020 of avoiding Zoom calls and burning banana bread, not many had the forsight to pull off a life-changing Cheltenham punt. But you have to take your hat off.
It’s a sublime bet and tops off a great week for Irish punters!
The plucky punter placed a bet in a Paddy Power shop in Shannon at the start of December, backing Honeysuckle for the Champion Hurdle at 16/1, Bob Olinger in the Ballymore at 20/1, Put The Kettle On in the Champion Chase at 8/1 and Minella Indo in the Cheltenham Gold Cup at 8/1.
His €20 stake returned exactly €578,340 and clicked this afternoon as Minella Indo gamely clung on to win the Gold Cup from stablemate A Plus Tard. The accumulator got off to the perfect start on Tuesday when Rachael Blackmore guided Honeysuckle to an impressive six-and-a-half length victory.
Bob Olinger was an even easier winner in the opening race on Wednesday, before Put The Kettle On upset favourite Chacun Pour Soi in the Champion Chase.
The bet was all riding on Minella Indo in Friday’s Cheltenham Gold Cup and Jack Kennedy’s ride was hoof-perfect as he travelled and jumped like a dream to score for De Bromhead and click this huge bet. Woof.
Well played!
