It looked like it was going to be an electric Cheltenham Festival for Paul Townend when he stormed to a 24l victory in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle onboard Appreciate It but frustration was on the horizon for Willie Mullins’ No 1 as he racked up a number of near misses.
The 30-year-old clocked up six second places including Sharjah in the Champion Hurdle, Concertista in the Mares’ Hurdle and Saint Sam in the Juvenile Handicap Hurdle on the first day.
Among Townend’s other high-profile bookings that failed to fire were Chacun Pour Soi in the Queen Mother Champion Chase and Min who found the pace set by Allaho in the Ryanair Chase too hot to handle. He was also left disappointed as Al Boum Photo fell agonisingly short in his bid to make it a hat-trick of Gold Cup wins.
In the end, Townend finished with three winners to his name and you can check out his results in full below.
