Cheltenham Day 3: All you need to know about Thursday at the Festival

Day three is done and dusted

We can close the book on day three of Cheltenham 2021.

There was heartbreak for many an acca in the opener as Envoi Allen fell before Chantry House went on to win, but Rachael Blackmore had punters smiling by adding two more winners in Allaho and Telmesomethinggirl to go to five for Festival.

While Flooring Porter took the feature race in the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle and The Shunter snared the Paddy Power Plate Handicap Chase.

Our watchalong punters Ally McCoist, Ray Parlour and Alan Brazil were royally entertained by it all – you can watch back their stream on Twitter, Youtube and Facebook.

Here are the full results from the day’s races:

And if it wasn’t your day, there’s always day four, where all eyes will be on Al Boum Photo to see if he can win a third Gold Cup – though there’ll be plenty of challengers:

And there’s the Mrs Paddy Power Mares Chase to look forward to as well!

Here’s how some of our pundits assess the final day’s runners and riders.

It should be another epic day’s racing, but you can re-live day three in our liveblog if you’re worried you missed anything…

Thursday 5:01pm | Mount Ida closes on the leaders

And breaks away from the second-to-last fence to win it comfortably in the end.

Had to earn it though…

Thursday 4:56pm | Storm Control leads

While favourite Mount Ida lingers in the middle of the pack…

Thursday 4:51pm | One more time…

They’re on their way in the final race of the day

Thursday 4:42pm | What’s our top trader going for in the last?

Could use your free fiver bet on Frank Hickey’s each-way pick

“Deise Aba ran really well in this race last year when finishing fifth off a mark of 142 off the back of winning at Sandown and finds himself coming into this race off the same mark of 142, after winning the very same Sandown race last time.

He was ridden far more prominently last time at Sandown and they are tactics that can give you an advantage at Cheltenham if you get into an early rhythm. Amateurs can’t ride this year, so Richard Johnson will take the ride.  If things fall into place for him, he has a big race in him.”

Thursday 4:24pm | It’s all about Rachael Blackmore again

Telmesomethinggirl comes through to pass stablemate Magic Daze and take 1-2 for Henry de Bromhead, making it five winners for Rachael Blackmore so far at the festival.

AP McCoy quips there’s nothing shallow about this success.

Or, indeed, Gaga. *ba-dam-tish*

Thursday 4:21pm | Two to go

And they’re bunching up with Magic Daze still leading

Thursday 4:17pm | No trouble this time

They’re off! Magic Daze moves to the front, leads by two lengths…

Thursday 4:02pm | We have an answer to the most pressing question of the day

Thursday 3:58pm | Just two races to go

The Grade 2 Mares’ Novices Hurdle is up next.

Thursday 3:51pm | Excellent!

Jockey Jordan Gainford thanks owner Mr Burns in his post-race interview.

There won’t be a sun blocked out in Springfield this week!

Though you would think he’d have enough Uranium…

Thursday 3:48pm | And now takes over the lead

And no one can catch him – The Shunter, under Jordan Gainford, takes it at 9/4, Farclas second (5/1) and Top Notch (50/1) third.

Thursday 3:48pm | The Shunter on his shoulder

The starting favourite just behind the leader, but they’re still tightly bunched with 6 to go…

Thursday 3:45pm | And they’re off now

Phew.

Kiltealy Briggs leading in the early going….

Thursday 3:44pm |”Ye’re going the wrong way lads…”

Thursday 3:42pm | One dodgy start…

And another.

So it’s a standing start for this big field. We’re paying six places if you can sneak a bet on….

Thursday 3:34pm | Ruby’s pick

“The one that strikes me is Fils D’Oudairies for trainer Joseph O’Brien. His second-place finish to Envoi Allen is strong form. He’s a fine, big horse who looks well treated.”

From Ruby’s cheat sheet for today. Get the latest odds here.

Thursday 3:22pm | Get ready

It’s the Paddy Power Plate up next – six places for each-way – if there’s a time to take up our FREE £5 bet on any Cheltenham race today this is surely it…

Thursday 3:16pm | Matt has a word with…

The unlucky Jonathan Moore who is leading the winner around towards the winner’s enclosure and talking about missing his ride today as the final result confirmed.

Thursday 3:12pm | But the leader can’t be caught

Flooring Porter takes it under Danny Mullins, who stepped in to replace Jonathan Moore today and gets his first win at the Cheltenham festival.

Thursday 3:10pm | Flooring Porter puts the foot down

Or four of them with three hurdles to go, Paisley Park making a move after the second last…

Thursday 3:06pm | And it’s go, go, go

In the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle – three miles and 12 hurdles to go.

Flooring Porter at the front.

Thursday 2:59pm | Don’t forget…

Thursday 2:46pm | That was something else

And we’ve still the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle and the Paddy Power Plate to go.

Let’s see what Mick Fitz makes of the next one:

The Paddy Power Stayers Hurdle lost a little of it’s sparkle when Thyme Hill came out, but there is still plenty of opposition to the favourite PAISLEY PARK. Vinndication unseated his rider in the Ladbroke Trophy at Newbury, was second in the Charlie Hall and fourth at last year’s festival carrying a big weight.

He is a really interesting runner and is a very good each-way price if you don’t fancy the favourite. I just feel Paisley Park will be too good for them.”

If you’re hanging on to your FREE £5 bet – one per customer and the usual T&Cs apply, check them out here – Vinndication could be worth an each-way punt there…

Thursday 2:38pm | And wins the Ryanair Chase!

Leading all the way around and pulls the field apart right from the start under Rachael Blackmore.

Another win for Willie.

Fakir Do’Oudairies second, Tornado Flyer third, Kalashnikov fourth.

Thursday 2:36pm | The front two maintain their lead

And now Allaho pulls away from Min

Thursday 2:34pm | Allaho to the front

Ahead of Min and there’s a six-length gap already tot the rest…

Thursday 2:32pm | Allaho 10/3, Min 4/1…

And Fakir D’Oudairies 11/2 as they go to the line.

And it’s a false start.

And they’re off at the second attempt.

Thursday 2:25pm | And it’ll be take-off in the Ryanair Chase shortly

Where we’re paying four places…

Thursday 2:10pm | Final result for the second race

Hope it’s a good one for you – six places, it should’ve been…

Thursday 2:02pm | Mrs Milner emerges from the pack

And moves three lengths clear after the last.

James must be delighted.

A first win of the day for Ireland with Paul Nolan training.

That’s more like it.

Thursday 2:00pm | Loose horse on the inside

Causing some trouble with 2 to go…

Thursday 1:55pm | Big move in the market for..

The Bosses Oscar as they go off in the second race of the day.

Thursday 1:48pm | If you haven’t already…

Might be worth taking up your free £5 bet in this one

Thursday 1:31pm | Up next…

It’s the Grade 3 Pertemps Handicap Hurdle where we’re paying out on the first SIX placed.

Thank you very much.

Get the odds here.

Thursday 1:31pm | Full result confirmed

Think that chap who cashed out for £275,000 will be very glad he did after that…

Thursday 1:25pm | Shan Blue leads by four lengths three from home…

But is closed down by Chantry House and Fusil Raffles who tussle it out with Matt Chapman’s pick, Chantry House, coming out on top at 9/1 to make it a 1-2 finish for Nicky Henderson.

Envoi Allen up and about as jockey Jack Kennedy trudges back…

Thursday 1:24pm | Unbelievable

Envoi Allen down! Horse and jockey are okay by the look of it. Stunner.

Thursday 1:22pm | Lining up at the start

And they’re off in the first of the day, Fusil Raffles leading in the early stages…

Thursday 1:14pm | The chaps are live

And Alan could be in for an uncomfortable afternoon

Thursday 12:55pm | 25 minutes to go

Seem the ideal time to check in with our Pundits Cheat Sheet for Thursday, where Matt Chapman is the only one looking beyond Envoi Allen in the opener:

“Envoi Allen just has to turn up to win but I’m going to have a few quid on CHANTRY HOUSE each-way.”

Thursday 12:03pm | Free kryptonite!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a replica of the Power Power Plate trophy that’ll be awarded to the winner of the 3:40 today

Think that could really bring the living room together.

And no, it does not come with Matt Chapman attached.

Thursday 11:50am | Top tips for day three

Don’t miss our pundits picks for Cheltenham day three, here’s just a selection fo what’s on offer:

And if you’re feeling overwhelmed by all that you can fall back on your football knowledge for the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle with our personality test that’ll match you up with the perfect punt!

And we’ve also pulled a rather nifty trick by compiling tips from all across the papers and websites to evaluate the best punts in every race from day three (Little tip just between you and me – I think Envoi Allen is going win).

How are we the first to think of that, eh?

There’s also From The Horse’s Mouth with Ruby and Frank to listen to:

That’s everything but the kitchen sink included there – though he was gurgling last night that he fancies Fakir D’Oudairies now that I mention it…
