The Arkle Chase promises to be an absolute belter this year as Energumene attempts to upset odds-on favourite Shishkin, who won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle last season.
Taking up it’s traditional slot as the second race of the Cheltenham Festival, the Arkle is a true test of speed and jumping over 2m on the Old Course at Prestbury Park.
The field, made up entirely of novice chasers aged five and older, will have to navigate 13 fences and then show an impressive turn of foot up the famous hill if they want a share of the £175,000 prize pot.
While Shishkin and Energumene head the market, there are a number of other likely contenders holding entries in the race and there’s no risk of losing out if your pick pulls out thanks to Paddy Power’s non-runner money back offer.
Matt Chapman: “He won’t just win the Arkle but he will hack up and show he’s the best jumps horse in training in the UK. Last year’s Supreme Novices Hurdle hero SHISHKIN has done nothing wrong in three runs over fences and is just an absolute machine.”
Ruby Walsh: “I think SHISHKIN is the best horse in the race but he’s odds on and with Paddy’s non-runner money back offer I’d sooner take a chance on another. I’ll go with ENERGUMENE for a bit of value.”
Frank Hickey: “If you’re looking for an each-way non-runner money back bet then SKY PIRATE has potential, but I think ENERGUMENE is the bet in the race. He has been impressive and there is substance to how impressive he has been.”
Timeform:“SHISHKIN deserves his position at the head of the market, though ENERGUMENE is also a hugely exciting prospect and a clash between the pair will be fascinating viewing.”
