A fresh race for the Cheltenham Festival when a fourth day was added to the meeting in 2005, the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle has become a hit with punters – and this year’s renewal looks set to be competitive.
A total of 12 hurdles over a distance of about 3m on the New Course at Prestbury Park await the novice hurdlers.
Willie Mullins’ exciting six-year-old Stattler, Paul Nicholls’ Barbados Buck’s and the Gordon Elliott-trained Fakiera are all prominent in the early betting.
We know what you’re asking… who will succeed Monkfish as champ? Paddy Power’s Ruby Walsh and Frank Hickey have already run the rule over potential runners and offered their antepost tips on our special ‘Countdown to Cheltenham’ podcast.
Cheltenham chiefs received 74 entries for the 2021 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle, although the field will need to be whittled down before race day. Thanks to Paddy’s non-runner money back offer on all 28 races at this year’s Festival, there’s no risk if your pick pulls out!
Ruby Walsh: “BARBADOS BUCKS did well at Kempton and Farouk Dalene also did well to hang on at Limerick over Christmas. The latter has a squeak, but this is an even more open race than the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle.”

Frank Hickey: “I’ve been banging on about FAKIERA for a long time. He is just crying out for 3m and I would just love it if they stepped him up on his next start. He had three runs in maiden hurdles between 2m and 2m 2f last season and was second in all of them.”
