The Cheltenham Festival is just around the corner, and the bets are starting to roll in as punters predict who will be top jockey at this year’s meeting.
The 2021 market has a slightly skewed look with Barry Geraghty joining our very own Ruby Walsh in retirement and Davy Russell sidelined due to injury.
While that means there is an opportunity for several young jockeys to stamp their mark at Prestbury Park, Paul Townend has unsurprisingly been installed as the odds-on favourite to enjoy the most successful week.
Cheltenham Festival: Willie Mullins’ top contenders rated or slated
The three-time Irish Champion Jockey is Willie Mullins’ No 1, meaning Townend has an outrageous book of rides lined up for Cheltenham – Appreciate It, Energumene, Monkfish, Chacun Pour Soi and double Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo to name a few.
It’s hard to look beyond the 30-year-old but if anyone can upset his plans it would be Jack Kennedy, who is set to ride a number of fancied entries including Envoi Allen and Quilixios.
Nicky Henderson will hope Nico de Boinville can get the best out of his chargers while Rachel Blackmore, Mark Walsh and Harry Skelton are also targeting a prolific week of rides.
