A bit like Father Christmas popping down your chimney to deliver presents on Christmas Day, the handicapper has announced the weights for this year’s Grand National. The buzz is building, the interest is mounting – we have less than two months to wait for the greatest steeplechase in the world.
Tiger Roll is bidding to emulate Red Rum and win the race for a third time but the popular 11-year-old’s participation was thrown into doubt by owner Michael O’Leary before his handicap was revealed.
“I think if the British handicapper rates him fairly, somewhere in the 150s, he’ll run in the Grand National,” O’Leary said.
“And if he rates him in the 160s or the 170s, he won’t run in the Grand National. We will take him out after the weights declaration.
“The plan with Gordon [Elliott] has always been to go for the cross-country at Cheltenham, where I believe he will be kicked out of the way again by Easyland.
“And then I think the options are possible retirement or we may look at entering him in the Irish Grand National, where I think he would be more fairly weighted in the 150s – where his rating should be.”
Tiger Roll has been allotted a rating of 166 (11st 9lb) – significantly higher than in 2018 and 2019 – and trainer Elliott hopes the two-time winner will run at Aintree, despite O’Leary’s concerns.
“I’m training Tiger Roll for the Grand National and I will be keen to run him,” Elliott said.
“I have to concentrate on training the horse and I just hope his owner lets him run in the race for the public. Everyone will be looking forward to seeing him run again in the Grand National but Michael will make that decision.
“It will be disappointing for everyone if he doesn’t turn up but as you know Michael makes the decisions. He is seven pounds higher than what he won off before but it is probably fair enough. I sort of expected that really.
“From the bottom of my heart it is hard to see him having much less weight with him being such a specialist, but we have what we have so we have got to take it and hopefully he can do us proud.
“You are always hoping you are going to get a couple of pounds less than what you have been given, but to be honest we will just smile and take it.”
Bristol De Mai, Easysland and Santini are the only horses to be given a higher rating than Tiger Roll. All three are rated at 167 (11st 10lb). Presenting Percy, who is swerving the Cheltenham Gold Cup for a crack at the Grand National, has also been handed a mark of 166 (11st 9lb).
The deadline for the first scratchings is March 2, with a further set of withdrawals to follow on March 23 before the five-day confirmation stage on April 5. The final declarations will be made on April 8.
A total of 105 horses have been included in the weights – and thanks to Paddy’s non-runner money back offer you won’t lose out if your pick does not make the final cut.
