Horse Racing Tips: 9 fine flutters at Southwell Today

A best bet for every race at Southwell on Thursday from The Racing Post.

16:10 Undercover Brother

An interesting contest in which the fly in the ointment could be Sommer Katze. Yet to fire on turf this summer, he’s back at a track where he’s 2-2 and a revival could be on the cards. Dapper Man, My Kinda Day and Queen Of Kalahari are also considered but UNDERCOVER BROTHER has run with great credit on his last two AW starts and he may be able to cope with the rise in class under these conditions.

16:40 Jacattack

Ancient Times will be a big player if returning to his debut form, while Swooper is another who needs to leave a disappointing effort behind him. Shaykhoon is seriously respected after a promising debut effort (when very green) but the strong-travelling JACATTACK could be the type to take well to this test and he can get off the mark at the third attempt. Barbaroma was well beaten on last week’s debut but there are grounds for expecting better today.

17:10 Bernard Spierpoint (NAP)

Kraka should be happier back at Class 6 level and he’s run well here in the past. He’s considered, while Lucky Beggar comes here in form and Captainofthebounty needs a market check after his absence. The interesting one is BERNARD SPIERPOINT (nap), though, with Shaun Keightley’s 3yo having shown promise on Tapeta and the move to this surface highly likely to prompt plenty of improvement judged on his pedigree.

17:40 Passional

Puchita took her C&D record to 4-5 when getting up late on Tuesday and she’s a key player despite the steadier of a 5lb penalty. Global Melody can fare better back at this track but the unexposed PASSIONAL may be the answer. She’s been slowly away the last twice but today’s extra furlong should give her more time to get organised and her stable couldn’t be in better form. Simon Crisford had an excellent strike-rate with his runners here when training in his own name and his filly has the potential to rate much higher.

18:15 Sweet Bertie

Two interesting newcomers with dirt-influenced pedigrees are Honor Day and Basilic, who could go well and should be noted in the market. Macmerry Jim has already run well on the surface and looks a big player, but preference is for SWEET BERTIE, who ran with promise first time and is taken to step up on that.

18:45 Evening Spirit

Hammer Gun has been struggling on turf this summer but this is his preferred venue and the handicapper has given him a real chance. He can feature more prominently again today, with Six Strings and Equidae also coming into the reckoning. EVENING SPIRIT has been disappointing but she wasn’t beaten far at Haydock last month and this drop into a 0-70 could be the catalyst for a breakthrough success. Her yard does well here and is banging in the winners at present.

19:15 Drew Breeze

Atalanta Queen loves it here and can’t be ruled out but recent form suggests she remains vulnerable. Menina Atrevida and Ruby Dream have points of interest but DREW BREEZE, who ran well here recently and again on turf since, could be the one for today.

19:45 Poetic Lilly

Although she has to prove she can act on this surface, this looks a good opportunity for POETIC LILLY to add to her Lingfield success last time. Maykir may be the one to give her most to do, while Muqarred and Luscifer are not written off.

20:15 Escalade

This could prove competitive. Sophar Sogood has possibilities back at this track, while Justified and Kensington Art could go close if acting on this surface. However, the suggestion is ESCALADE, who is proven here and could find some improvement for this longer trip.
