Five rides, three winners and a cool 5,255/1 treble for jockey Seamie Heffernan on Sunday – but the top jock wasn’t the only one laughing all the way to the bank.

One intrepid Paddy Power punter in Co. Kerry somehow managed to land on all Heffernan’s winners in a €1 each-way treble at the taken odds of 25/1, 9/2 and 50/1 to bag a cool €7,418 bounty in the time it took Bayern Munich to win Sunday night’s Champions League final.

The first winner for both came courtesy of Chief Little Hawk in the 2.50pm at Naas who got the ball rolling by a short-head from Monaasib in a desperate drive for the line in Europe’s richest two-year-old race this season, the 6f Ballyhance Stakes.

This was quickly followed by a more sedate length and three quarters victory for Passion in the Group 3 Stanerra Stakes at 3.20pm to bring up a quick-fire double for Heffernan, his boss Aidan O’Brien and more importantly, our Co. Kerry punter.

So far, so good, but it’s hard to know what our pal was thinking as a 25/1 winner in an each-way treble was already in the bag and your whole bet stands or falls on a 50/1 shot, going into the last leg. Heffernan’s mount Sweet Gardenia, needed to be in the first three for a decent return, but a win against the odds, would leave our friend in clover.

To say it was asking a lot for one of the outsiders in the field to win a competitive race is an understatement, but there were some grounds for optimism as Sweet Gardenia had finished five lengths behind the first winner of the wager, Chief Little Hawk, on her previous run at the Curragh, when both finished behind impressive winner, Frenetic.

And so it proved as the two-year-old filly Sweet Gardenia swept to the front under Heffernan, to romp home by three and a quarter lengths to land a massive-priced treble for the jockey and a canny each-punt for our Co. Kerry pal.

Congratulations friend – your place in our socially-distanced Punting Hall of Fame awaits.
