Horse Racing Tips: Frank Hickey has 5 fancies for Monday’s racing to kick start the week

Good man Hickey. Go raibh mile.

Naas 3.05 – Frenetic

Frenetic looked so impressive on her first two starts, particularly when winning the Listed Flier Stakes by a wide margin. Stepped up to six furlongs last time for the Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes, she again got the measure of Mother Earth but proved vulnerable in the final 100 yards and was caught close home by Aloha Star. I think the drop back to five furlongs here will really suit her and despite the fact she carries a 3lb penalty, I think she will take plenty of beating.

Naas 4.35 – Ediyva

So Wonderful will make the market but despite some excellent efforts in group company this season, she is finding it very difficult to get her head in front and was turned over last time in a maiden when very weak in the market. Blinkers go on here but I think she is worth opposing and the Ediyva might be the one to take advantage if So Wonderful doesn’t run up to her best again.

Ediyva is bred to be useful and showed plenty of ability when fourth on her debut at Leopardstown last season and trained by Dermot Weld. The winner that day was Celestial Object and that horse has been placed in Group 3 company this season. Ediyva shaped like she would improve plenty from the experience gained from that debut and now starts out her season being trained by Michael Halford.

Yarmouth 4.30 – Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi is becoming a bit of a cliff horse for me but I will be very disappointed if he can’t win a handicap off a mark of 82. He showed plenty of potential in both starts last season, finishing second on debut to Johan, before getting off the mark at Lingfield.

His second handicap start here over a mile has worked out well, with the winner Tsar following up at Ascot and now being rated 15lb higher, while the second was just touched off at Newmarket on his next start. Last time at York, Rovaniemi was a little slow away but ran well in fifth in what looked a decent handicap where the right horses came to the fore. There looks to be plenty of pace on here, which will really suit this strong traveller and hopefully he can get off the mark in handicaps.

Windsor 5.40 – Spirit Of May

Spirit Of May did quite well as a three-year-old sprinter last season, winning four handicaps from marks of 64 up to 81. While he now is operating off a mark of 86, I think there is reason to believe that he can rate a bit higher yet. On his last start of last season, he bolted up at Chelmsford off a mark of 81 and he has won on turf when winning at Chester last season. He also ran well at Newmarket and here at Windsor, so I don’t think it is fair to pigeon hole him as an all-weather horse.

He shaped alright on his reappearance at Newmarket but didn’t really get to lead as he likes and shaped like he would improve for the run also. That looked a stronger heat than this and there is every chance he could get to set his own fractions in front here and if that proves to be the case, it could well outrun his odds.

Roscommon 3.20 – William Of Wykeham

This is a competitive little staying handicap hurdle but it is very difficult not to be impressed with the manner in which William Of Wykeham got off the mark over hurdles last time at Ballinrobe. It was a poor maiden hurdle but he didn’t have to come off the bridle to win by over five lengths and that improved performance coincided with the step up in trip to two miles and six furlongs.

He is up in trip again here and back in a handicap off a fourteen pound higher mark but I think he might be capable of defying the rise. He caught the eye on a number of occasions last season over hurdles but looks like he is getting the hang of what is required now. He is only five and definitely open to plenty of improvement while it is also a positive that the yard have had 3 winners from their last 6 runners.

Frank’s Five Tips Summary:

Naas 3.05 – Frenetic
Naas 4.35 – Ediyva
Yarmouth 4.30 – Rovaniemi
Windsor 5.40 – Spirit Of May
Roscommon 3.20 – William Of Wykeham
