Admirality caught the eye after only three days off when second at York last time, producing much his best effort of the season. Held up in the early stages, he travelled strongly on the bridle for a long way and kept on well to get within a length and a half of the winner, who produced a borderline smart effort. Admirality can race from 3 lb lower here and is very much the one to beat on Timeform’s weight-adjusted ratings, surely only a matter of time before he ends a losing run stretching back to his win over this C&D in May 2019.

Wondrous Words ran to a fair level when third on her debut at Haydock earlier this month, proving no match for the front pair but certainly showing enough to suggest there are races to be won with her. That contest is working out well, too, with the fourth and the fifth (won at Sandown) both advancing their form when next in action. Bred to be useful, Wondrous Words has the potential to do likewise and is fancied to improve past Glen Force, who sets the standard on form but didn’t look entirely straightforward (hung left under pressure) when second at Ayr last time.
Nat Love shaped well when third on his most recent outing at Ripon, where he possibly did too much too soon in forcing the strong early gallop. He deserves extra credit under the circumstances for hanging around as long as he did, ultimately beaten a little over four lengths after being headed a furlong out. That was just his third run for the Steve Gollings yard (formerly trained by Mick Channon), and he certainly showed enough to suggest that he is beginning to find his feet, so there looks to be plenty in his favour now 2lb lower in what is a weaker race.
