Dark Lion hit the racetrack with a lofty reputation having obviously shown the right signs at home prior to his debut. He disappointed favourite backers that day but shaped well enough before a respectable run in the Coventry a fortnight later, looking in need of an extra furlong. He broke his maiden next time up over 7f, with the second who pulled clear with him winning on their next start, and still looks a work in progress who can go on to justify connections’ faith in him as the season progresses.
Tulip Fields has the profile of a typical Mark Johnston handicap winner and I think she looks a bet here. She started out well in handicaps, winning her first two starts before being a little disappointing at Sandown over 10f. She returned to form though in a listed race at Hamilton where I thought she was eyecatching at the finish, looking like a step up in trip. She gets that here and I think she’ll prove very difficult to beat.
Dermot Weld won the opening contest at Ballybrit yesterday and I’m hoping he can do the same today. This horse ran an encouraging race on debut when chasing home two more experienced rivals at Gowran Park three weeks ago so that should stand her in good stead coming into this race this evening. Jim Bolger’s horse Meala sets the standard but she looks beatable so Umneyaat is the selection in the opener.
