A cracking day’s action on ITV Racing where Enable is the star attraction as she chases a hat-trick of wins in the King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (15:35) at Ascot, but there’s plenty on the undercard at both tracks in the build up to the day’s feature.
The Coventry Stakes at the Royal meeting is normally the strongest two-year-old form around, but things are a little different this season in the re-jigged schedule. Saeiqa was third in that contest to shock 150/1 winner Nando Parrado with Qaader in second. However, Twaasol won for us at Epsom on Derby day and despite not being in love with the track’s undulations – he still did us convincingly. Ascot will be right up his street and he gets a confident vote for trainer Owen Burrows.
Telecaster was impressive when winning in France recently and it’s easy to forget how easily he won the Dante ouver this course and distance when beating Too Darn Hot and Japan a couple of season’s ago.
Mark Johnston’s Elarqam was given a strange ride last time when sixth to Fanny Logan at Royal Ascot. Prior to that had finished in front of Telecaster at Haydock when just chinned by Lord North, who went on to win the Prince of Wales’s Stakes. Elarqam won this race last year and gets the nod.
The Frankie Dettori and John Gosden combo may have better luck in the mile handicap with Tsar. William Haggas’ Johan was a cheeky winner at Newbury but the one that caught my eye at Windsor was Clive Cox’s Dance Fever. He kept on well to the line on what was his seasonal debut and should improve for that first outing.
Orbaan won nicely last time over course and distance and leading north of England duo Danny Tudhope and David O’Meara will have plenty of supporters. I like another northern-trained runner in Tadleel who was third to Orbaan that day, but Richard Fahy’s runner gets a lot of weight off him now.
