The recently-retired Barry Geraghty joined the lads on this week’s From The Horse’s Mouth to talk about the good old days. They covered a lot of ground from riding winners hungover to Barry’s plans for the future.
Geraghty won many big races and created lasting memories for racing fans across the globe with some famous rides. However, for Paddy, there is one particularly painful event involving Barry that happened away from the track years ago that he had to get off his chest.
Speaking on this week’s From The Horse’s Mouth podcast, Paddy said: “I’ve got a couple of bones to pick with Barry. The bone I have to pick first is… I’ve got Moscow Flyer’s last ever winning colours stuck to the wall behind me. Barry probably actually won’t remember this but it was many years ago, I guess the year Moscow Flyer retired, I was at a Punchestown preview night at some hotel in Naas and myself and Barry were on the panel.
“We’re kind of walking around, we’re there early making small talk, looking at some of the auction prizes and he says to me, ‘Jeez, they’re [Moscow Flyer’s] the last ever colours from Aintree, the Melling Chase or one of those, how much do you reckon they’ll go for?’ and I was like, ‘Ah jeez, I dunno, depends who’s here. They could go for a couple of grand’.
“Anyway, the auction happens and the bid is like 400 quid and then Barry picked up the mic and says, ‘Paddy said earlier he’d pay two grand for them’. Next thing I was in for two grand and then somebody bid again and I f*cking bid again! I spent two-and-a-half grand on them!
“I had to hide them under the bed for about 18 months until Jane found them and went mad! We were saving up at the time to move house or something.”
