Staxton’sfrom figures are not overly inspiring but the handicapper has given a right chance as a result. He now finds himself off a mark of 90 and that is five pounds lower than his last win, which came over this course and distance this time last year. There was plenty of promise in his reappearance effort at Newmarket, on ground that was fast enough for him, to suggest that he can be competitive off this sort of mark. He makes each way appeal with Paddy paying 4 places.
Last year’s winner of this race, Fool For You, makes plenty of appeal in her bid to make it back to back wins off just a three pound higher mark. Last year she was very strong at the finish and that bodes well for her chances here, as there appears to be plenty of pace on and there could well be a burn up pace wise.
Ornate, Caspian Prince, Lord Riddiford and Copper Knight all like to be prominent and Fool For You is drawn among the pace, so there is every chance that she will get a lovely tow into the race. There was plenty of promise in her reappearance run at Listed level at Ayr earlier in the week when she was fourth and she would look to have really solid each way claims here with Paddy offering an extra place.
Carnwennan looks to have solid claims in this years renewal of the Northumberland Plate. He was an impressive winner of last year’s consolation race off a mark of 87 and finds himself only nine pounds higher here. He was heavily backed in that race and the result never looked in doubt. He did disappoint at Newbury subsequently but ran well in a decent York handicap to end his season. He comes in here off the back of two second place finishes at Kempton and Newcastle and with Paddy paying six places, he looks very solid to hit the frame at the very least.
