There won’t be much between Dandy’s Max and Disco Beats who finished second and third at Pontefract recently. But, they may have to settle for minor honours again behind CUBAN DANCER, who looked sure to find success when narrowly denied on his debut.
17:35 The Golden Cue
The effect of the draw will be all-important, but high is often an advantage so long as the ground does not get too soft and that could give the likes of Highjacked, Naples Bay, Alameery and Highland Acclaim decent prospects.
However, the vote goes to THE GOLDEN CUE (NAP), who shaped really well on his seasonal reappearance at Chepstow on Monday and whose jockey can choose which way to go from his middle stall. Montalvan is dangerously well handicapped and is worth noting in the betting.
18:10 Paddy Power @ 5/1
Victory Angel made a pleasing start for new connections at Beverley and is a sprinter of interest, but the prospect of rain does temper enthusiasm. Swissterious is a fascinating contender starting out for David Barron and the betting should provide clues, while Conga and Slowmo can also have a case made for them.
PADDY POWER left the impression his reappearance was needed though and he could be the answer off a mark that we know is well within his range
18:40 Bossipop
Progressive four-year-old Fortamour recorded a good Topspeed figure for this grade when going close over 7 furlongs on Tapata a fortnight ago and probably still has more to offer, but we can’t be sure he’ll be ideally suited by today’s switch to 6 furlongs on turf. Preference is for habitual front-runner BOSSIPOP, who won twice off higher marks than today’s over C&D last season.
Abel Handy ran well over 5 furlongs on his recent stable debut and is also of interest, despite nagging concerns about today’s extra furlong. The Armed Man tends to go well when fresh and may also feature.
19:10 Streak Lightning
Mark Johnston’s colt STREAK LIGHTNING impressed when quickening clear at Wolverhampton on his recent debut and appears to have an excellent opportunity to complete a quick double here.
Egrecio is a potential danger if judged on his promising two-year-old debut in Ireland, but he disappointed on his only subsequent outing and it’s hard to know what to expect from him after a 400-day absence. Turkestan showed enough when midfield at Yarmouth to give him a good each-way shout.
19:40 Guvenor’s Choice @ 10/3
A run of the mill handicap in which the protagonists may be Mac Ailey, Betty Grable, Maldonado and GUVENOR’S CHOICE.
Narrow preference is for the last-named who has shaped well since joining Grant Tuer and did enough over 1m at Yarmouth last time to suggest he can get off the mark on turf over this distance. Najashee has stamina to prove but is another to consider.
20:10 Gulf Of Poets
Society Red has slipped to a tempting mark and made an encouraging seasonal debut on Tapeta this month, while Amjaady has been placed on his last four all-weather starts and can go well from the front again here.
However, the suggestion is GULF OF POETS, who arguably ran better than the bare form suggests when midfield in a good race on his recent reappearance and is well handicapped on a piece of C&D form from a year ago.
Awake My Soul and Illustrissime both had excuses when fourth in two different divisions of a Newcastle handicap a fortnight ago and are others to consider.
20:40 Eastern Sheriff
Some potential on show here, but none of these are totally bulletproof. EASTERN SHERIFF will need to start better than he did last time, but a fourth in the circumstances wasn’t a bad effort at all and he is moving into handicap company at a realistic level.
Dark Heart will appreciate this drop in grade and is next best ahead of Socially Shady.
